Staff Nurse

CLASSIFICATION/STATUS: Non-Exempt, Licensed, Full Time, Permanent

Immediate Supervisor: Nurse Manager

As part of the dynamic Human Resources team at Charles River Community Health (CRCH), a healthcare practice providing comprehensive and compassionate care to underserved communities, the Staff Nurse provides direct professional nursing care and education to Health Center patients and ensures continuity and quality of care. The Staff Nurse has a solid understanding of patient needs and will work collaboratively with primary care providers and a multidisciplinary team to develop, assess, coordinate, and optimize patient care plans.


  • Assesses patients' medical problems and complaints by phone and in person. Provide information and advice for home treatment when indicated.

  • Arranges for evaluation by a provider when indicated either by scheduling an appointment or telephone follow-up. Refer patients to the emergency room in consultation with a provider when indicated. Refer patient to other Health Center support services when indicated. Arrange transportation as indicated.

  • Educates patients and families by phone and in the Health Center about minor illnesses, medication usage, health maintenance needs, blood sugar monitoring, nebulizer usage and other prescribed health care regimens, operational procedures, and specialist referrals.

  • Participates in the establishment and documentation of standard triage protocols and procedures and patient education information and present materials for review/approval by medical leadership.

  • When necessary, secures appropriate interpreting services to handle communication with patients.

  • Work within various managed care systems to make appropriate triage decisions and to coordinate referral authorizations with the Coordinator of Managed Care.

  • Routinely monitors patient flow during clinical sessions so as to maximize patient access and provider productivity, adjusting add-ons or same day episodes to even patient volume amongst providers and to accommodate patients waiting to be seen. Reports on-going issues to his/her supervisor.

  • Documents all encounters in the medical record.

  • Calls patients or emergency rooms to follow-up on acute illnesses.

  • Reviews lab results daily, ensuring that they are filed appropriately and works with providers on appropriate follow-up.

  • Handles requests for prescription renewals in consultation with a provider.

  • Under the direction of the Director of Nursing and Nurse Manager, assists with the training of Medical Assistants.

  • Performs injections, diagnostic tests and procedures as necessary. Administer PPD planting and follow-up checks including referral to TB clinic.

  • Assists providers and provide nursing intervention during medical emergencies.

  • Completes WIC forms, school and camp forms, and immunization forms.

  • Receives and process lead test results and performs related patient contact and documentation.

  • Maintains emergency cart, controlled substances box, surgical, eye, ear, and suture trays. Reports equipment maintenance needs to the Director of Nursing.

  • Participates in community outreach projects and Center meetings as requested.

  • Participates in Quality Assurance activities as directed.

  • In conjunction with the Director of Nursing, establishes and documents procedures for treatment room stocking and securing clinical supplies and ensures supplies are properly stored to enhance efficiency.

  • Works collaboratively with other Health Center staff in meeting JCAHO and other regulatory and/or funding requirements.

  • Performs other duties as required by Nurse Manager or designee.


  • Bachelor of Nursing preferred, or graduate of LPN school.

  • Massachusetts Nursing license (RN or LPN) required.

  • Three years of experience practicing as a nurse preferred.

  • Experience with telephone assessment and crisis management preferred.

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills required.

  • Certification in CPR required.

  • Willingness to work one evening per week preferred.

  • Basic computer skill preferred or willingness to develop these skills.

  • Bilingual/Bicultural preferred.

  • Experience in diverse culture preferred.

Responsibilities * Participate in all phases of product development, including but not limited to system and hardware requirements definition, concept generation, detailed design, manufacturing process development, assembly, integration, verification, and validation testing * Manage a large scope of work including possible partnership with external partners for industrial design * Understand, analyze, and suggest design improvements to existing prototypes * Manage comprehensive verification and validation strategies at the subsystem and system level * Work with internal and external resource to produce highly functional prototypes * Be a helpful, collaborative team member Skills Needed * Electromechanical design experience including linear motion and positioning systems required * Proficiency with solid modeling required, Solidworks preferred, FEA experience and complex surface modeling nice to have * Ability to manage, interact with and influence multiple stakeholders required * Ability to produce, review and understand engineering drawings, GD&T and tolerance analyses required * Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturing, Design for Inspection, and various assembly techniques required * Comfort with and understanding of the interplay between various components of a complex, electromechanical system and collaboration with multiple functional groups required * Prior direct work with external development partners and manufacturers strongly desired * Experience with medical device product development / CFR 21 Part 820 design controls, IEC 60601 and the 510(k) submission process strongly desired * Prior experience developing verification and validation plans to advance from prototype designs to finished products helpful * Sheetmetal and electrical enclosure experience helpful * Ability to work independently and autonomously when necessary * Ability to effectively communicate ideas and give/receive constructive feedback * Prior experience working on a Robotics Systems and/or human input devices is a plus About You * Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field * 8 years' experience with Bachelor's Degree * 6 years' experience with Master's Degree * Passion for excellence in product development * Enthusiasm, willingness to learn and a positive attitude!
