PROCEPT BioRobotics is a surgical robotics company enabling better patient care by developing transformative solutions in urology. With an initial focus on BPH, the company's AquaBeam Robotic System delivering Aquablation therapy, is the first FDA-cleared, automated surgical robot for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Aquablation therapy combines real-time, multi-dimensional imaging, automated robotics and heat-free waterjet ablation for targeted, controlled, and immediate removal of prostate tissue. Aquablation therapy offers predictable and reproducible outcomes, independent of prostate anatomy, prostate size or surgeon experience.

SUMMARY

The Staff Mechanical Engineer will lead design teams as well as be the lead design contributor for projects involving the design and development of next generation surgical tools and sub systems which will define the future of robotic surgery. The new hire will be part of the New Product Development Team and be responsible for all aspects of the next generation Aquablation System design, development, and transfer to the AquaBeam System manufacturing group.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the design of a capital robotic system and associated accessories for applications focused on delivering robotic surgery

  • Design and develop robust mechanical and robotic assemblies for a medical device that will be scaled to large volumes

  • Provide designs, integration and test solutions in a fast pace environment with a quick development cycle

  • Interface with vendors for component sourcing and fabrication

  • Assist in the development of manufacturing fixtures and instrumentation

  • Develop assembly and test procedures

  • Independently manage projects and outside consultants

  • Works closely with cross-functional departments to develop robust, scalable assembly processes that are cost efficient and ready for high volume production

  • Maintain trained status for, and comply with, all relevant aspects of the PROCEPT BioRobotics Quality Management System to ensure product and support regulatory compliance

  • Understand and adhere to the PROCEPT BioRobotics Quality Policy

  • Understand and adhere to the PROCEPT BioRobotics EHS Policy

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Certifications)

  • BSME required, MSME preferred. Minimum of 10 years of working experience designing medical capital equipment systems and/or medical electro-mechanical products including robotic systems.

  • Extensive experience with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, verification, qualification, and transfer to manufacturing

  • Proficiency using CAD to design and document mechanisms: SolidWorks (required)

  • Experience with hands on prototyping techniques and the fail fast method of design, build, test, and iterate

  • Experience with design for manufacturing using a multitude of processes, for example: Injection molding, machining, sheet metal forming, and rapid prototyping.

  • Strong understanding of component selection criteria, and design for reliability and manufacturability

  • Proven experience with developing criteria for outsourced products and the subsequent managing of those programs

  • Ability to communicate effectively (written, oral) across all levels and organizations

  • Experience with thermal design considerations for an integrated console.

  • Experience with design and testing to meet IEC 60601 requirements.

  • Mechanical design and analysis skills, including statics, dynamics, kinematics, strength of materials and stress analysis.

  • Travel up to 10% of the time, internationally and domestic

  • Maintain trained status for, and comply with, all relevant aspects of the PROCEPT BioRobotics Quality Management System to ensure product and support regulatory compliance

  • Understand and adhere to the PROCEPT BioRobotics Quality & EHS Policies

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The employee will frequently be exposed to engineering labs, a machine shop, and manufacturing clean rooms. The environment is subject to moderate noise from machinery (IE machine shop equipment, the PROCEPT Aquablation unit, computer equipment, printers, etc.), for which proper hearing protection may be assigned and worn.

  • The employee is occasionally required to attend tissue, animal, or cadaver labs and to manipulate models and/or organs for testing

  • The employee may be exposed to hazards including electrical sparking, water, and chemicals, for which proper protective equipment will be assigned and worn.

  • The employee will frequently be exposed to clinical operating rooms, for which proper personal protection equipment will be assigned and worn.

For this role, the anticipated base pay range is $150,000-$207,000 a year.

PROCEPT BioRobotics is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices and we aim to provide employees with total compensation packages that are market competitive. While our ranges are posted, the exact base pay offered for this role will depend on various factors, including but not limited to the successful candidate's qualifications, skills, experience, location or comparison to other employees already in similar roles. In addition to base salary, our positions are eligible for variable compensation through one of our incentive plans as well as equity compensation based on role and level. PROCEPT also offers a comprehensive suite of benefits including, but not limited to, health insurance plans, ESPP, 401k retirement savings plan with a company match, and paid time off programs. All compensation and benefits programs are subject to the discretion of the company.
