Geartrain Design Engineers in Tesla's Drive Systems Engineering Team are responsible for design, release and launch of the geartrain components for Tesla vehicle product lines. You will be part of the team that creates and executes world-class drive units in terms of performance, cost, and manufacturability. Components of particular importance include gears, bearings, shafts, clutches, couplers, actuators, differentials and integration of these components.

  • Lead the development of novel concepts for geartrain related components to minimize part count, cost, and complexity in the drive unit

  • Develop geartrain component requirements

  • Geartrain system design utilizing parametric modeling to evaluate performance trade-offs

  • Geartrain component design of rotating shafts, torque split devices, couplings, and clutches

  • Design, coordinate, and execute system level and component level tests for performance, durability, reliability, and variability

  • CAE analysis (static, modal, fatigue, topology optimization)

  • Matlab/Simulink/Simscape modeling

  • 2D and 3D modeling utilizing CAD software

  • Supplier coordination for high volume contract manufacturing

  • Work with world class experts in firmware, design, and test engineering to develop and bring innovative technologies to mass production

  • Lead and mentor junior members of the Drive Systems team

  • Expert in rotating machinery design

  • Deep understanding of bearings, gears and gearbox lubrication

  • Experience with differentials, actuators, clutches, axle disconnect systems or multi-speed transmissions

  • Deep understanding of ANSI Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing application to part drawings and function

  • Expert in 3D modeling within a product development environment. CATIA preferred

  • Expert in CAE analysis software package like Ansys, Abaqus, Hyperworks

  • Experience of launching multiple automotive designs from concept through release and production or the equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability.

We are specifically focused on addressing local transportation and the outsized impact towards Keeping the World Adventurous Forever that comes with disrupting short, high emission trips.</p><p>We are looking for an exceptional geartrain engineer that will be responsible for the design, release, and launch of the geartrain components. Components of importance include gears, bearings, shafts, clutches, couplers, differentials and integration of these components.</p><p>Responsibilities</p><ul><li><p>Geartrain component design of rotating shafts, torque split devices, couplings, and clutches</p></li><li><p>Geartrain modeling to evaluate geartrain noise, efficiency, durability, reliability</p></li><li><p>Spline sizing and load rating</p></li><li><p>Bearing load analysis and life rating</p></li><li><p>Establish bearing and gear mesh lubrication requirements</p></li><li><p>Establish gear mesh and bearing alignment requirements</p></li><li><p>2D and 3D modeling utilizing CAD software</p></li><li><p>Statistical analysis for component stack-up</p></li><li><p>Component level testing for performance, durability, reliability, and variability</p></li><li><p>Geartrain component quality troubleshooting resulting in supplier corrective action</p></li></ul><p>Qualifications</p><ul><li><p>Prior geartrain design and analysis experience from concept through production ramp</p></li><li><p>Strong fundamental knowledge of statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials</p></li><li><p>Experience in rotating machinery design including gears, bearings, and tribology analysis</p></li><li><p>Geartrain system modeling experience utilizing Romax, Masta, Transmission3D, KissSoft or equivalent</p></li><li><p>Proficiency in 3D modeling and product lifecycle management (PLM).
