Cedarville University is seeking to hire a Front-End Web Designer/Developer who focuses on creating engaging digital experiences that tell the Cedarville story through advanced HTML and CSS skills. The position involves designing on-brand, responsive, visually captivating layouts that are accessible and compliant with industry standards, and that leverage data-driven SEO strategies to maximize the impact and visibility of University websites. The role also emphasizes collaboration and continuous learning, with responsibilities that include interfacing with various teams to optimize web content and staying updated with the latest web technologies and trends.

This is a full time (2080 annual hours), exempt position, that reports to the Executive Director of Web Strategy and Marketing Technology.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (Essential Functions):

Engaging User Interface and Experience

  • Advanced HTML and CSS Expertise for Layout Development: Create engaging, responsive HTML layouts using advanced CSS techniques, working within the boundaries of the web content management system. Utilize CSS preprocessors, CSS layout systems, and visual aesthetics.

  • Image Creation and Enhancement: Utilize graphic design skills to create or modify visual elements such as graphics, logos, photos, and artwork, ensuring brand alignment and overall enhancement of website aesthetics.

  • Responsive Design and Standards Compliance: Ensure that designs are adaptable to a variety of screen sizes and devices, while also conforming to industry standards, regulatory requirements (including WCAG), ensuring browser independence, cross-platform compatibility, and delivering an optimal user experience.

  • Wireframing and Prototyping: Create wireframes that outline the structural layout of new or redesigned webpages and develop interactive prototypes to visualize and test user interface designs.

  • Front-End Frameworks and Libraries: Develop dynamic, efficient, and scalable webpages using modern front-end frameworks and libraries. Understand component-based architecture, state management, API integration, and app performance and maintainability. Work with back-end developers to get data in the needed format for front-end use.

  • Performance Optimization: Optimize website performance, including load times, and implement best practices to reduce website bloat and enhance browsing speed.

  • Accessibility: Develop WCAG-compliant web layouts and content to provide accessible content to a wide-spectrum of users.

Data-Driven Decision Making

  • SEO Optimization: Collaborate with the SEO/Analytics Specialist to identify and target Cedarville's audiences, mapping user journeys and applying best practices to optimize the website's effectiveness in meeting the University's marketing objectives. Implement Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies to enhance the website's visibility and ranking in search engine results, ensuring content is optimized for maximum impact.

Collaboration and Learning

  • Discovery and Collaboration: Facilitate discussions and provide expert input on content and design choices, addressing issues related to website appearance and content. Assist users with web design issues and collaborate with various departments to keep webpages current and relevant. Share knowledge and expertise through documentation and occasional training seminars.

  • Continuous Learning: Maintain a working knowledge of new web technologies, trends, best practices, and legal requirements.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in web development, graphic design, or related field or equivalent experience

  • A high level of graphics tool expertise and sensibility to produce professional level work

  • HTML, CSS, and JavaScript mastery

  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, and identify and resolve problems

  • Able to organize, prioritize, and multi-task a variety of assignments in a fast-paced environment

  • Skills that apply to working professionally with a variety of people in a variety of work settings

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in higher education

  • Experience using a web content management system
