Zurich is currently lookingfor a Staff Legal Counsel to work out of our North American offices inPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania.

TheStaff Legal Counsel represents the Companys insureds in all phases oflitigation for matters of moderate to high technical complexity. Engages in thepractice of law and the representation of Zurich insureds in litigation toprotect their interests in litigation.

Additional responsibilities will include:

  • Achieving best outcomes for clients bydemonstrating a high level of technical excellence in case handling, trialpreparation and presentation for matters of moderate to high complexity

  • Driving positive outcomes by correctly applyingthe law and legal trends, conducting legal analysis and research, preparinglegal pleadings and documents, preparing for and managing pre-trial discovery,and participating in judicial or administrative hearings and trials

  • Documenting case files by accurately capturingand updating relevant information in compliance with best practices

  • Working to have a timely resolution to matters bycollaborating with the claims adjuster, developing a case strategy and escalatingissues as appropriate

  • Ensuring customer service to clients byproactively communicating information; responding to inquiries; and followingcustomer protocols

  • Determining and implementing alternative disputeresolution techniques as appropriate, by using effective mediation andnegotiation skills within authority limit

  • Maintaining professional and technical knowledgeby participating in educational opportunities, staying current with industrytrends, establishing personal networks and participating in professionalsocieties

  • Contributing to the team effort by accomplishingrelated results and collaborating on matters as needed

  • Serving as a technical resource by providingguidance and/or mentoring lower level attorneys on legal strategies and use oftools and resources

  • Ensuring legal compliance by following state andfederal laws and regulations

  • Protecting Zurich's reputation by keeping claimsinformation confidential

Basic Qualifications:

  • JurisDoctor and 7 or more years of experience in the Litigation area

AND

  • Memberof the Bar in good standing in jurisdiction(s) in which practice is located

  • Experiencewith Microsoft Office and Adobe

  • Experienceworking with Lexis

  • Knowledgeof the insurance industry, claims and the insurance defense litigation legalenvironment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Licensedto practice law in the state of Pennsylvania and New Jersey

  • Strongcommunication skills

  • Strongnegotiation skills

  • Experienceworking in a team-based environment

  • Strongcollaboration skills

Job Summary: Liberty Mutual has an exciting opportunity for a highly dedicated and qualified attorney to join our Legal Department's Legal Strategic Services (LSS) as Counsel. Your core responsibilities will include innovative law firm legal quality auditing and assessment of legal expertise of external law firms performing services for Liberty Mutual, its Strategic Business Units (SBUs), and customers. As Counsel, you will provide legal advice and carry out actions which have an impact upon the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of the Company and its customers while maintaining high standards of legal and business ethics and professional responsibility. Responsibilities: * Provide legal consultation on law firm effectiveness and performance. * Responsible for delivering best in class auditing and informing/promoting best practices to law firms to ensure they comply with Company Litigation Guidelines and Protocols by: * Coordinating and leading all aspects of on-site and virtual legal quality audits of outside law firms including coordination with the LSS Financial Audit team. * Collaborating across LSS teams responsible for outside counsel management and internal and external customer relations, SBUs, Claims, and other stakeholders in the audit process. * Actively participating in post audit action planning with Regional Firm Relationship Managers and law firms to advance enhanced performance and compliance with audit findings. * Responsible for review and assessment of legal expertise to include an attorney's legal acumen, issue identification and analytical skills, strategizing, proactive and effective case advancement, communication, reporting, case handling, and budgeting practices. * Investigate law firm operational procedures, analyze litigation processes, and examine flat fee retention agreements to assure and maximize efficiencies in law firm handling and staffing. * Identify improper or unethical litigation practices, and make recommendations to initiate necessary changes and counsel management. * Enhance the delivery of legal services through identifying and promoting diverse and inclusive external legal partners. * Develop and maintain extensive knowledge related to assessing compliance with legal expertise and best practices expectations. * Maintain legal knowledge and monitor key developments in the law. * Advance the use of technology/innovation and continuous improvement in legal quality audit and law firm performance assessment. * Use and enhance a variety of auditing tools for data and performance analysis. * Utilize MS Office, Excel, Salesforce, SharePoint, and other systems to maintain databases and reports on performance and audit compliance results. This role includes regular domestic travel (25-50%). Qualifications: * Completion of law school with J.D. or L.L.B. and admission to the Bar of at least one United States jurisdiction. * Generally requires a minimum of 3 years as a practicing attorney with related litigation and legal services experience. * Requires strong analytical skills and the ability to work with minimal direction. * Strong communication skills (oral and written), listening skills, and accuracy and attention to detail. * Considerable law firm and/or litigation management expertise. * Strong metrics, business analytics, and systems acumen. * Extensive knowledge of litigation practices and procedures, court systems, and procedural rules. * Experience with lean, continuous improvement, and agile development. * Comprehensive understanding of insurance principals, claims, and operations.
