The Staff Engineer is a full-time entry-level professional who will assist with work on a variety of transportation projects under direct supervision of an experienced professional. A Staff Engineer in the traffic department will focus on developing skills with engineering and design software, particularly AutoCAD, Microstation, Synchro, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel. The Staff Engineer is also responsible for written tasks including the preparation of Traffic Impact Studies, Road Safety Audits, and other technical reports. They will work with Project Engineers to apply engineering concepts more broadly and develop skills for working more independently. The ideal candidate would have the flexibility to work out of the Boston, MA, Taunton, MA, or Lincoln, RI offices.


  • Complete data collection, field reviews, traffic engineering analyses, conceptual design, roadway design

  • Assist in the preparation or modification of reports, design plans, specifications, construction schedules, environmental impact studies, and permits for projects

  • Use AutoCAD 3D Civil and other computer assisted engineering and design software/equipment to prepare engineering and design documents. Experience utilizing AutoCAD a plus.

  • Draft transmittals, memos, meeting minutes, proposals and response letters

  • Develop and maintain organized project files

  • Assist in client contact and communication pertaining to specific projects as necessary

  • Coordinate with technical staff as necessary

  • Perform field reviews for projects within the region to collect a variety of field data.


  • Basic oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions to present to Supervisors

  • Organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Knowledge of HCS, Synchro, AutoCAD 3D Civil, and Microsoft Office


  • Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university

  • Relevant internship or 0-5 years of experience


  • Engineer In Training Preferred


While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in the field and may be exposed to outside weather conditions. Work requires frequent and prolonged computer use. May occasionally require lifting up to 25 pounds.


This position may risk exposure to bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.


This is a full-time position. The typical work days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some night and weekend work may be required.


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.

JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE The Technology & Innovation (T&I) engineer within Materion's Performance Alloys & Composites (PAC) business will conduct and support projects that develop new products and processes. This support will include both the technical and operational aspects of product and process development using Lean Sigma methodologies. The incumbent must be able to operate both individually and in teams and will support new product and process launches. The individual will be responsible to support Materion's Operations, Sales, and Marketing teams; in addition, some customer support may be required. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES * Comply with and support all EH&S activities while operating in a safe, honest and ethical manner * Coordinate, monitor and manage innovation funnel New Product and Process Development (NPPD) project activities * Manage implementation of all stage gates activities relating to NPPD * Provide support to internal and external NPPD customers * Identify potential projects for both cost savings and new products * Support cost analysis for new products * Report on the progress and status of activities as required * Develop, qualify, and transfer new processes for the production environment * Coordinate and monitor processing of assigned new products on the manufacturing floor * Provide the T&I lab supervisor with appropriate technical support for CTS activities * Support the evaluation of new equipment and processes * Support other projects as required in accordance with T&I Group standards * Develop an operational understanding of the Performance Solutions business unit * Develop an operational understanding of the company and its products * Run projects according to the Lean Sigma (LS) methodology * Keep current in field(s) of expertise and achieve LS Black Belt certification * Operate under light supervision while providing supervision/support for technicians * Monitor and measure assigned project activities and keep within established goals and objectives * Conduct customer visits as needed * Work to protect and document IP Travel Requirements: * Up to 15% travel may be required based on business need EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Basic Qualifications: * Undergraduate degree in materials science field (e.g. Metallurgy, Ceramics or Materials Science) * 3 years of experience participating in engineering and product development projects, or equivalent experience * Demonstrated ability to successfully participate on technical and/or design projects and teams * Good written and presentation skills * Comfortable using basic computer programs, including Microsoft 360 and Outlook Preferred Qualifications: * Experience including experimental design, data acquisition, process control, casting, welding and machining * Experience with strip metal processing, especially cold-forming and rolling. * Proven product or process development skills #CB Materion Lincoln RI
