POSITION SUMMARY:

The Staff Engineer is responsible for a full-time entry-level professional who will assist with work on a variety of transportation projects under direct supervision of an experienced professional. The Staff Engineer is also responsible for written tasks including the preparation of Traffic Impact Studies, Road Safety Audits, and other technical reports. They will work with Project Engineers to apply engineering concepts more broadly and develop skills for working more independently.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Complete data collection, field reviews, traffic engineering analyses, conceptual design, roadway design

  • Assist in the preparation or modification of reports, design plans, specifications, construction schedules, environmental impact studies, and permits for projects

  • Use AutoCAD 3D Civil and other computer assisted engineering and design software/equipment to prepare engineering and design documents. Experience utilizing AutoCAD a plus.

  • Draft transmittals, memos, meeting minutes, proposals and response letters

  • Develop and maintain organized project files

  • Assist in client contact and communication pertaining to specific projects as necessary

  • Coordinate with technical staff as necessary

  • Perform field reviews for projects within the region to collect a variety of field data.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions to present to Supervisors

  • Knowledge of HCS, Synchro, AutoCAD 3D Civil, and Microsoft Office

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university

  • Relevant internship or 0-5 years of experience

COMPETENCIES

  • Organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Basic written and oral communication

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no immediate supervisory responsibilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

This job operates primarily in a professional office environment. This role requires frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works outside the office and may be exposed to outside weather conditions. This position may include occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

This position may risk exposure to bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.

WORK SCHEDULE:

This is a full-time position. The typical work days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some night and weekend work may be required.

TRAVEL:

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.

Your Opportunity This position is for a Senior Traffic Engineer with a minimum of 15 years progressive design and project management experience on municipal, agency and other transportation projects. You will serve as project manager or lead traffic engineer and play a crucial role to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality technical services and tracking overall project performance for projects of varying scale and complexity, from conceptual through final design. You will be expected to evaluate and develop solutions to improve mobility for all users, integrating Complete Streets principles and, where applicable, urban mobility best practices. You will also make a substantial contribution to our pursuits of new projects in Massachusetts and throughout New England to grow our transportation practice. The position will be primarily located in our Burlington, MA office with opportunities to work in our Quincy, MA and Boston, MA offices. Your Key Responsibilities * Serve as transportation project manager or lead traffic engineer in the design team, monitoring project design quality, schedule, scope and budgets. Also responsible for office production and overall QA/QC of the elements of projects, including reports, plans, specifications and cost estimates. * Management and oversight for tasks such as traffic safety analysis, intersection design, traffic signal design, roadway signing and pavement markings layout, maintenance of traffic and traffic operations analysis and simulation. * Preparation and review of written technical reports to document the results of engineering/planning studies. * Establish and nurture relationships with key clients and review agencies. * Provide leadership to grow traffic engineering staff, influence, mentor and train team members with positive growth-oriented perspective * Preparation of written proposals for multidisciplined transportation projects, participation in interviews and contract negotiations Your Capabilities and Credentials * Possess excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including effective presentation of information in public settings. * Collaborates effectively within project teams and with other groups and company offices * Comprehensive understanding of all phases of project development. * Ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies. * Familiarity with MassDOT design standards. * Possesses excellent time-management skills; Thorough understanding of project tasks within the overall project schedule, budgeting and efficient use of time and resources. * Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Office Suite, including MS Project * Experience with various design software/tools (Synchro, HCS, Sidra, Vissim, etc.) for multi-modal operations analysis and simulation for a variety of conditions and needs at specific intersections, along arterial corridors, for freeway segments and interchanges and complex urban settings. Education and Experience * Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or related field. * Licensed Professional Engineer, if out-of-state then ability to obtain registration in Massachusetts within 3 months. * Minimum of 15 years of experience.
