Summary:

This position is responsible for the research, development, testing and specification of packaging solutions for new and existing Hershey products. Working independently and as part project teams the Engineer will lead the packaging development process as the subject matter expert from concept to implementation and optimization.

Working closely with business partners the Engineer will create innovative packaging solutions in support of new product introductions which perform effectively throughout the supply chain, at retail, and during consumption. The position requires strong detailed timeline development and project management, proactive technical analysis and risk assessment, and ability to communicate clearly in technical and non-technical settings. Further, the position requires demonstrated strong working knowledge of blow moulded and injection moulded plastic packaging and filling processes.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong personal leadership, sound technical aptitude, applied understanding of quality systems and measures, and a disciplined approach to the commercialization process.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Marketing and Supply Chain partners to execute against project objectives and expectations

  • Research, develop, test and implement packaging solutions to meet project commercialization goals

  • Develop project plans that define scope, task, schedule, costs, business impact and risks.

  • Present design recommendations to key stakeholders. Ensure project success by keeping project on schedule through strong communication while evaluating technical data.

  • Execute plans and identify issues/obstacles/risks, propose solutions, gain alignment and bring to resolution.

  • Conduct analytical testing on materials and packaging and clearly interpret data findings.

  • Develop and execute design of experiment/test methodologies to determine packaging feasibility and performance

  • Determine impact of new packaging design to existing and new automation at manufacturing locations. Modify designs accordingly to optimize manufacturing and labor efficiencies.

  • Responsible for determining packaging material specifications to maintain product integrity. This includes development of appropriate design to maximize long term quality and shelf life of product while minimizing or reducing cost.

  • Ensure the accuracy of specifications issued, including mechanical drawings, assembly guidelines, and written text.

  • Develop packaging bill of materials and enter into project management system.

  • Conduct value analysis and cost reduction activities on packaging materials and labor reduction.

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:

  • Working knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes; includes understanding of how packaging design changes impact processes, lead times, resource requirements, and development costs.

  • Ability to design and interpret results from transport simulations, lab and plant testing.

  • Ability to independently prioritize and manage multiple projects (~50-60 projects)

  • Demonstrated interpersonal leadership. Self-Motivation and initiative.

  • Ability to translate internal and external customer needs into relevant/meaningful packaging solutions

  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills, and organizational skills

  • Demonstrated problem solving skills, and ability to make decisions independently

  • Demonstrated technical leadership with strong overall business acumen

  • Strong working knowledge of blow moulded and injection moulded plastic packaging and filling processes.

  • Strong understanding of quality management systems and measures, process capability and performance, and ability to interpret quality data

Minimum Education and Experience

Requirements:

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related science field Required

Experience for Sr Engineer Packaging

  • Minimum 3-5 years packaging development experience required

Experience for Staff Engineer Packaging

  • Minimum 6-10 years packaging development experience required

VIEW JOBS 8/7/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-11-05T00:00 Job Location: Hershey, PA Summary: The Engineer will be a member of the Packaging Systems Engineering group supporting the Global Operations Engineering Group and will be based in Hershey, PA. This position utilizes all aspects of conceptual engineering design, cost estimation techniques, system and project proposal development, supplier evaluations, equipment and system installation and start up, and successful transition of the system to the plant operating and maintenance staff. This position requires domestic travel (depending on projects, travel can range from 30-50 percent) at times to support on-going business needs. International travel would only be for equipment research if we source international (which is typically 1 week in duration) and varies by project. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will: * Provide technical analyses, develop alternatives (cost estimates, feasibility, specifications, and interpretation of requirements) and prepare recommendations, if required. * Design and provide the optimal packaging solution for a given project. These solutions will include packaging and control support for all phases of the capital projects including development of system concepts, design, cost estimating, system installation, check-out, commissioning, training, and successful transition of deliverables, including system operation manuals, maintenance documents, and technical knowledge to the plant staff as defined in Hershey's Project Management process. * Demonstrate a willingness to identify process and manufacturing alternatives that meet new business requirements or establish functional excellence. * Evaluate and participate in cross-functional processes in order to diagnose root cause issues and provide options for resolution. Qualifications: Must have basic understanding and/or knowledge of the following: * Common packaging materials used in the food packaging industry * High speed flow wrapping * Secondary packaging such as carton and tray loading, statistical scales and bagging equipment * Tertiary packaging such as case packaging and palletizing * Machine and equipment design * Servo and control technology Must have some combination of knowledge and basic experience in the design, application, and maintenance of: * Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's) (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.) * Electrical and electronic industrial instrumentation * Automation and process control * Industrial computer systems and networks * Distributed control systems * Other automation, electrical power, computer, and control technologies * Proven experience with AutoCAD and Excel desired Knowledge/ Skills: * Hands-on problem solver, focusing on detailed problem resolution and documentation * Must possess the ability to understand and apply sound engineering solutions keeping in mind costs, schedules and operational performance * Exhibit sound judgment, understanding and proficiency in the development of engineering solutions and have the ability to effectively evaluate, communicate and build consensus cross-functionality associated with recommendations on increasingly complex and fast paced projects * Strong oral and written communication skills are critical * Must have strong PC skills * Ability and willingness to work effectively in a diverse, disciplined team environment and work with limited supervision * Must have the demonstrated potential to accept new and challenging work assignments * Must possess demonstrated basic technical knowledge in the packaging controls arena Education: * Bachelor of Science degree in engineering required (Mechanical / Electrical / Mechatronics /Engineering Technology majors preferred) Experience: * A minimum 2 years of experience with related co-op/ internship experience is required.
