The Groupon Platform Engineering and Tools group is looking to hire a Staff Engineer with experience in implementing and providing Observability solutions for distributed web applications and services. The Observability platform team's charter is to ensure that Engineering and Production Operations always know the current and past states of the entire system with fine granularity, high correlation and ease of use with a view to continuously lower our MTTD and MTTR.

As a team member of the Observability platform, you will be responsible for the design and architecture of the next gen Observability platform and rolling out standards for logging, monitoring and alerting. Groupon operates at hyper scale with 500+ micro services and millions of users and transactions a day. The observability teams leverage custom software, open-source solutions, and 3rd party services to provide metrics, logging, monitoring and alerting across thousands of hosts. We operate what we build, devops style.

You'll spend time on the following:

• Designing and architecting the next gen Observability platform using open source, 3rd party and custom logging, monitoring solutions

• Rolling out application standards for logging, monitoring, and alerting

• Providing automated baseline coverage for Observability for all applications at Groupon

• Building cutting edge systems with full ownership of this data pipeline

• Bring in Machine Learning and AI into the Observability framework

• Get insight into eCommerce business and operational metrics, and internal mobility into different lines of business

• Operating on a global scale where your work will impact millions of customers

We're excited about you if you have:

• 10+ years of hands on design, development and operations experience with large scale distributed web application development

• Experience with Implementing best practices for software development in large organization such as rolling out standards for logging, monitoring and alerting

• Full lifecycle ownership (development, testing, deployment, operations)

• Expert proficiency in high level language such as Java or Ruby.

• Experience with development and operations of metrics, logging and trace data collection, transportation, aggregation, and visualization. (Wavefront, Telegraf, Nagios, ELK, Open Telemetry etc.)

• Experience building and operating high-scale RESTful services preferred

• Experience with Cloud based services preferred

• Knowledge of Containers and Kubernetes is a plus
