Location/Division Specific Information
The Staff Electrical Engineer will work with other talented scientists and engineers within the GC-GCMS research and development group at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Austin, Texas.
How will you make an impact?
Our multi-disciplinary team is looking for a key member in the development of analytical instrumentation for life sciences, forensics, toxicology, and environmental analyses. You will architect the design, analysis, simulation, test, and integration of electrical systems. The role involves leadership and collaboration with engineers (electrical, mechanical, software, quality, and manufacturing), scientists, project managers, contractors, and suppliers through the product lifecycle.
What will you do?
Lead system level feasibility work to investigate electronic architectures
Develop system requirements for electronics modules, evaluate designs for consistency, and perform design work as needed across the entire system
Utilize modern CAD tools for schematic entry, design simulation, and PCB layout
Interface with contractors, prototype vendors, and fabrication facilities for to deliver electronic modules
Plan and execute efforts on new product development and introduction (NPDI) projects
Develop, design and implement functional test fixtures and processes to ensure products are manufacturable, serviceable, and comply with regulatory requirements as appropriate
Coordinate quality improvement efforts in both prototype and production system
Contribute significantly to the knowledge base of the group through patent applications and publications
Maintain detailed records and documentation of all work carried out to preserve the intellectual property of the company
How will you get here?
This position minimally requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field and 20+ years of relevant electronic/system design experience. A Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field may be desirable.
Demonstrates mastery of design and analytical tools required in role and associated industry standards and best practices, including low noise analog, high impedance, medium power, digital, radio frequency, VHDL, and/or microcontroller design
Knowledge and experience programming microcontrollers and field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) competency with C and VHDL preferred
Extensive experience performing electronic bench work demonstrable competency with industry tools and techniques for test and measurement
Experience with high voltage (up to 500V) and low noise design techniques
Experience in high impedance circuit measurement
Experience in designing closed loop control circuit (temperature and pressure regulation, analog feedback, etc.)
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Able to translate marketing requirements into a system architecture and document requirements in module specifications and subsystem deliverables
Able to prioritize complex engineering tasks
Have expert knowledge of applicable industry standards and requirements such as IPC, ISO, UL, CE, and RoHS
Working knowledge of IPC standards, Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) design practices, and International safety standards (CE EN61010)
Expertise using schematic capture and PCB layout software (Altium preferred)
Able to integrate layout simulation tools (LTSPICE, Hyperlinks, etc.) into design work
Basic software programming knowledge (i.e. C#) sufficient to write applications for laboratory testing, debugging, and control of electronics and hardware.
