JOB DESCRIPTION:

We are seeking an experienced, high caliber Staff Electrical Engineer to play a key role in our electrical engineering team and as part of Abbott's Mechanical Circulatory Support R&D group. In this position, you will design and develop new products for our market-leading Ventricular-Assist devices.

Impact this role will have on Abbott:

  • Design and oversee implementation of PCBA- -level electronics for life-sustaining medical devices

  • Select appropriate components and technologies

  • Starting from high-level use cases and system requirements as input, author hardware requirement specifications, failure mode analysis, test protocols, test reports and detailed design documents

  • Conduct design reviews to achieve team alignment

  • Develop company's competitive edge and contribute to intellectual property where appropriate

  • Troubleshoot and debug system level problems and isolate root causes

  • Mentor and develop engineers and technicians

Your experience(s), education and knowledge will further expand Abbott's marketplace success:

  • Bachelor of Science in electrical/electronic engineering or related engineering field

  • Command of analog circuit design and systems theory as it applies to signal acquisition and conditioning or electromechanical control systems

  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant hardware design and development experience, including a minimum of 3 years direct experience in developing active medical devices following design controls

  • Experience in other regulated industry (e.g. aerospace, automotive) will be considered

  • Demonstrated ability to work throughout the product life cycle from developing new concepts to driving the design through transfer to manufacturing

  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization

  • Ability to travel approximately 10%, including internationally

Your preferred qualifications and education:

  • MS/PhD preferred

  • PCB layout skills (Altium preferred) and familiarity with latest manufacturing processes and limitations (IPC, SMTA)

  • Familiar with IEC 60601-1 basic electrical safety compliance and IEC 60601-1-2 EMC.

  • Experience working with Class III Implantable Medical Devices

  • Knowledge of embedded software development or programmable logic is desirable

  • Training and experience in manufacturing processes and methods, especially in the manufacturing of medical devices and/or high-reliability devices

How will you make an impact? As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will play a key role in innovating solutions that serve our customers. The Senior Electrical Engineer will be responsible, but not limited to: * Analog and digital circuitry design, data acquisition system, and digital electronic controls (thermal and motion) of instruments. * Microprocessor architecture and design; real-time operating system knowledge is a plus. Architecture is typically based on 32-bit microcontroller or DSP with support of CPLD or FPGA circuitry. * Communication schemes and drivers development; such as USB 2.0, SPI, and I2C. * Product development cycle which includes requirement/definition, design and development, verification (such as unit tests) and traceability matrix, and transfer. * Implementing and documenting test cases to verify design and/or regression analysis. * Fault isolation; troubleshooting, and root cause analysis activities during complex system integration and testing for systems in development and on-market. * Conducting and documenting technical design reviews with fellow engineers in a collaborative way to produce the highest levels of quality, performance, manufacturing yield and product reliability. * Work with component vendors on researching the latest technologies. * Research, document, publish, and present technical findings that can lead to better product performance, more product reliability, and lower production cost. * Develops or identifies tools and methods that allow reutilization of designs and improve productivity of firmware engineering resources. * Support to manufacturing, product management, and service group on existing products. How will you get here? * Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum 8 years working experience in related field is required or 6 years working experience with a Masters degree. * Expertise in the area of high resolution A/D and D/A circuit design including multi-ranging data acquisition systems with analog signal filtering and amplification. * Experience with microcontroller design, debugging and designing of programmable logic in CPLD and/or FPGA. * Understanding of the fundamentals of USB/serial communication as well as digital signal processing is a must. * Knowledge of EMC testing, troubleshooting, and implementing solutions. * Excellent understanding of analog and digital electronics including latest component trends. * Previous design experience in the area of closed loop control systems for motion and temperature controls and general purpose motor control. * Strong communication and organizational skills to work with cross-functional teams in defining project requirements are expected.
