Staff Engineer, Coatings
Location: Kohler, WI

The Staff Engineer, Coatings position will be responsible for maintaining an understanding of leading-edge coating systems (both functional & aesthetic) and providing technical direction for the development and/or application of new or enhanced coating systems. This position requires the ability to drive innovation, improve customer experiences, and contribute to business growth based on understanding and applying technical fundamentals across a wide range of coating systems and application processes. The ability to conceive, plan, and execute thorough evaluations of material- and process-related physical and chemical properties is a basic expectation.
Initiate and/or execute research and development projects focused on product improvement via integration of new or improved coating technologies.
Prepare project plans for the qualification of new and/or improved coating and application technologies. This includes quantification of technical objectives, definition of consumer and business benefits, assessment of risks, preparation of schedule plans, and project/product cost estimates.
Direct and/or coordinate work by engineers, support personnel, and/or outside groups involving development, prototype construction, and/or testing of potential materials and processes. Work closely with project groups to ensure materials satisfy performance, aesthetic, and cost requirements to deliver benefits to consumers and the business.
Maintain project records and prepare technical, cost, and other reports to show project progress as required.
Contribute sound professional advice, creative ideas, concepts, and approaches to new product development projects and manufacturing.
Keep abreast of coating technologies across a broad spectrum of applications/industries. Communicate information regarding new and/or novel materials and processes to others in the organization as appropriate.
Regularly consult senior management regarding material/coating technologies and advise on appropriate strategies.
Qualified candidates will meet the following requirements:
Bachelor's degree in engineering; preferably in materials science engineering, chemical engineering, or composites engineering.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant, increasing experience in coating-specific activities.
Additional skills sought include:
Specific areas of expertise such as new material formulation, surface enhancement, coating development, and other material research-and-development-related activities are desirable.
Experience in a manufacturing/application role is preferred.
