Position Overview

The Cloud Security Engineer will lead a team that is responsible for the overall security posture of VMware's UEM (Unified Endpoint Management) SaaS offering. This offering spans over 10 data centers including both public cloud and colocated infrastructure.

He/she will define a plan for analyzing and addressing the broad array of security considerations relevant to the service. The plan should encompass both customer-facing and supporting systems. Security benchmarks, vulnerability management, access control, risk identification and mitigation, security tooling, and proactive security analytics are all within scope.

This position is expected to be hands-on with both risk assessment and the implementation of remediations in an automated and repeatable fashion. This includes the application of industry benchmarks and ongoing patching of new vulnerabilities as they are discovered.

In addition to secure cloud infrastructure best practices, the engineer shall be well versed in SaaS operations including web application security, network security, Windows and Linux server management, ESXi-based hypervisors & associated tooling, and other fundamental security concepts to ensure the production services operates securely and resiliently. The ideal candidate will be familiar with and embrace DevOps philosophies, and engage in close collaboration with development, operations, and site reliability teams.

Role Responsibilities

  • Maintain security for VMware's Unified Endpoint Management global service platform per industry best practices

  • Work on identifying and assessing all threat vectors impacting the hosted services, including exploring things like lateral movement.

  • Leverage tools like AWS security manager to evaluate and enforce compliance with known benchmarks.

  • Engage 3rd-party pen testing services when applicable.

  • Transition the organization to a proactive approach toward security by applying ML/anomaly detection to identify possible breaches before they become otherwise known.

  • Engineer, implement and monitor security measures for the protection of the hosted services

  • Consistently identify and quickly remediate security vulnerabilities within defined SLAs

  • Ensure all systems, including application server, database servers, container clusters, and underlying management infrastructure are regularly scanned for vulnerabilities and patched accordingly

  • Help implement and design infrastructure-as-code to support secure & consistent non-prod & production environments

  • Collaborate with other Cloud Services engineers to securely operate and automate the global infrastructure

  • Work with internal teams to respond to security incidents and publish root cause analysis reports

  • Evangelize a security first mindset and provide technical leadership to the broader team

Required Skills

  • 8+ years implementing secure infrastructure environments in both cloud and conventional datacenters

  • 8+ years proven work experience as a system security engineer with hands-on implementation expertise

  • 8+ years of scripting (e.g., Bash, Python, PowerShell, etc.) or other related development experience

  • Expert knowledge of Windows and Linux OS management including role-based access control

  • Strong background in network security including management of firewalls, SSL ciphers suites, protocols, and DDoS protection strategies

  • Experience with VMware stack including ESXi, vCenter, NSX

  • Experience with public cloud (preferably AWS) security and deployment

  • Knowledge of SSO solutions, including MFA deployments

  • Experience with security aspects of operating SaaS environments

  • Worked with 3rd party Penetration Testing vendors for security research and pen tests

  • Hands-on experience in security systems, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, anti-virus software, authentication systems, log management, content filtering, etc.

  • Experience with modern container services like Docker and orchestration system like Kubernetes

  • Knowledge of configuration management (e.g., ansible, chef, puppet, saltstack, etc.)

  • Familiarity with CI/CD and source control tools like Jenkins, GitHub, etc.

  • Knowledge of static application security testing (SAST) and software composition analysis (SCA) tooling

  • Thorough understanding of the latest security principles, techniques, and protocols

  • BS in Computer Science or related technical field

  • US citizenship a plus
