Develop, direct and facilitate thorough orientation of new employees to Perioperative Services. Provide new Perioperative RN orientation through a Perioperative 101 process- Develop learning strategies and specialty rotations in collaboration with the OR Director. Monitor ongoing progress and adapt the learning plan as needed in collaboration with RN preceptors. Assess the learning needs of staff, prepare and present appropriate educational programs, including annual skills day. Coordinate and direct staff learning opportunities with the Managers and Clinical Leaders in PACU and Endoscopy. Develop written protocols, policies and procedures that guide the nursing staff in provision of perioperative care. Responsible for coordination and documentation of department process improvement activities. Participates in screening and interviewing applicants for hire with the OR Director.

  • Professional, Supervisory and Managerial Staff, keep abreast of all pertinent federal, state and NSMC regulations,

laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.

  • Managerial Staff ensure that their staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance

policies and procedures specific to their jobs.

Job Specific Responsibilities:

  • Maintain knowledge of current perioperative practice and AORN standards.

  • Demonstrate ability to function as circulating nurse and in the scrub roles.

  • Develop, direct and facilitate orientation of professional, technical and ancillary Perioperative Services staff.

  • Support new employees integrating with the Perioperative Services staff.

  • Develop and maintain an objective-based orientation program which integrates theoretical and clinical learning

experiences using principles of adult education.

  • Collaborate with other entities for the provision of Periop 101 strategies when applicable.

  • In collaboration with OR Director, provide input for coaching, counseling and guiding staff members and correct

performance deficiencies as needed. Complete 90-day reviews and make recommendations for continuation of

employment in conjunction with OR Director performance reviews.

  • Complete annual review of staff skills records, credentials and clinical competencies and provide input into staff, OR

Director and RN Resource Staff annual reviews.

  • Review requests for continuing education for appropriateness relative to individual and department needs.

Coordinate travel and registration for off-site continuing education requests.

  • Participates in departmental production system improvements and team improvement work.

  • Provide consultation to the Anesthesia Department to facilitate compliance with JCAHO's continuing education

requirements and support process improvement activity.

  • Identify staff learning needs relative to changes in standards of perioperative practice, policies and procedures, new

equipment, technology and surgical procedures.

  • Plan and coordinate/conduct educational programs.

  • Secure contact hour approval as appropriate.

  • Participate in the development, interpretation and application of departmental divisional and hospital directives and /

or procedures.

  • Establish and maintain learning resource material for department.

  • Coordinate orientation of new physicians, allied health staff and vendor representatives to Perioperative Services with

the Chairs and Chiefs of Service.

  • Collaborate with facility to establish and / or review objectives for student perioperative clinical experience and the

role of staff preceptors. Interpret and communicate student objectives and expected behaviors to the staff.

  • Coordinate / conduct student orientation to the operating room environment.

  • Assist the faculty in evaluating students' clinical progress, scope of experience and learning needs.

  • Establish and maintain effective and collaborative multi-disciplinary working relationships.

  • Collaborate with the OR Director / designee to uphold and enforce the unit policies and procedures.

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

  • Act as a resource person for peers and for other patient care areas.

  • Support the short- and long-term goals and objectives of the unit and hospital.

  • Assist in care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities:

  • Complete annual review of staff skills records, credentials and clinical competencies and provide input into staff and

RN Resource Staff annual reviews.

  • In collaboration with OR Director and Managers, screen and interview applicants for available positions in

Perioperative Services. Make recommendations for hire and distribution of FTEs.

Fiscal Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and submit recommendations for annual education budget. Review requests for continuing education for

appropriateness relative to individual and department needs. Coordinate travel and registration for off-site

continuing education requests

Required:

Current MA RN licensure, BSN, CNOR. Maintain current CPR and ACLS certification, can get ACLS certification within 30 days of hire. Comprehensive perioperative nursing experience in clinical managerial and / or

education role. Knowledge of the scope of nursing as designated by the MA Nurse Practice Act. Demonstrate appropriate independent judgment and decision making based on acquired knowledge, skills and scientific

principles. Demonstrated competency in development of educational programs and application of the principles of adult education. Knowledge of the application and utilization of audiovisual equipment. Excellent communication

skills. Ability to work autonomously and deal with a variety of people. Demonstrate effective communication and organizational skills

Experience:

  • Required: 5 years of related clinical and educational experience.

Education/Degree requirements:

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

  • Preferred:MSN preferred

Licensure, Certifications, or Registration:

  • Required: Current MA RN licensure, BSN, CNOR
