Job Summary and Responsibilities

This position will involve leading Systems Engineering activities across complex electro-mechanical surgical device programs and integrating the work of multiple technical disciplines. Proven communication skills, both written and oral as well as effective leadership are required. The Staff Controls Systems Engineer will work with internal and external teams to develop, implement, and test control algorithms and control software for robotic surgical instruments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the requirements development process specific to instrument controls, for an assigned instrument team(s). This role shall require effective collaboration with Lead Design engineers and other subject matter experts on: requirements content development, rationale, decomposition, trace management, verification approach, and risk assessment.

  • Conduct and/or participate in technical design reviews of requirements, specifications, software, and designs for instruments, systems, and interfaces

  • Design test methods and means of automated data collection and/or post-processing, as required, that can be applied to multiple product teams and/or tests to streamline development efforts.

  • Lead tests, analyze results, and develop written reports

  • Collaborate with Ethicon and external technical experts on controls development and documentation (e.g. software design specifications, software requirements, software test protocols)

Qualifications

Education:

  • A BS in computer science, electrical engineering, or other related fields is required
  • A MS or PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, or other related fields is strongly preferred

Experience and Skills:

  • A minimum of 6 years of related work experience is required

  • Experience in medical device industry or other regulated industry is preferred

  • A strong background in math & physics is required

  • A deep understanding of kinematics, dynamics, controls & motion planning, and simulations is required

  • Experience with a variety of programming languages and applications (e.g. MATLAB, Simulink, C++, Python) is required

  • Experience with real-time software and sockets programming is preferred

  • Broad Knowledge across mechanical, electrical and software engineering, as part of combined HW/SW systems is required

  • Experience diagnosing engineering design issues, including gathering and interpreting test data is required

  • Experience designing streamlined technical solutions that meet the needs of multiple diverse stakeholders is required.

  • Excellent technical writing and oral communication skills is required

  • Capable of effectively leading multiple parallel projects in a diverse team environment is required

  • Experience with direct or indirect leadership of technical personnel is preferred

  • Experience with a variety of operating systems (e.g. QNX, Linux) is preferred

  • Experience with distributed version control systems (e.g. Git, Subversion), code repositories and code reviews is preferred

  • Experience developing software unit tests using Python, C++ and Google Test or any other unit test framework is preferred

  • Experience developing software for safety critical systems is preferred

  • Familiarity with regulations surrounding software design control for medical devices, including IEC 62304, ISO 13485 and 21 CFR 820 is preferred

  • This position is based on Cincinnati, Ohio, and may involve up to 25% travel.
