Job Summary:

Provides spiritual counseling and support in accordance with patient, family and interdisciplinary team member beliefs and desires. Communicates with and enables the clergy or faith community to support patients and families. Provides spiritual consultation and education to patients, family members and interdisciplinary team members. Carries out the mission and spreads the culture of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Job Requirements:

Education and Work Experience:

  • Master of Divinity degree or equivalent subject matter: Required

  • Minimum of two completed units of Clinical Pastoral Education from a program recognized by ACPE or CPSP and On track to have completed a total of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education from a program recognized by ACPE or CPSP by end of first year of employment: Required

  • Ecclesiastical endorsement by Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries: Required

  • Three years' of related experience: Preferred

  • Direct pastoral ministry experience. Experience ministering in an acute healthcare setting.: Preferred

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current ministerial license from the Seventh-day Adventist Church: Required

  • Board certified through APC, ACI or CPSP or in process of completion within two years of hire: Required

  • Valid Driver's License (DL) and must be at least 21 yrs of age or older: Required

  • CPSP-PP or Adventist Chaplaincy Institute Certification (ACI) or Associate of Professional Chaplains Certification (APC-C): Required

  • Seventh-day Adventist Church Ministerial Credential (SDA): Required

Essential Functions:

  • Provides pastoral care services to patients in various situations, such as those undergoing surgical procedures, facing end of life issues or involved in traumatic accidents. Provides comfort and support to patient family members and friends. Works with home health staff to enhance sensitivity for the spiritual concerns of patients and families experiencing terminal illness and loss.

  • Provides calming support to angry or distraught family members and friends. Provides spiritual visitations, public worship services and outreach services. Assesses and responds to the spiritual, emotional and cultural needs of those counseled, including crisis interventions, ethical concerns and bereavement.

  • Functions as liaison and connection with the faith community on behalf of the organization. Responsible to customize and deliver orientation of new employees into the mission and values of Adventist Health. Functions as liaison and representative of Adventist Health to the sponsoring church of Seventh-day Adventists.

  • Responds to urgent situations, including medical emergencies (Code Blue) and deaths, at the request of administrative coordinators, nurses and family. Maintains confidentiality of medical and personal patient information. Works with individuals from diverse economic, cultural, racial and religious backgrounds. Works with hospital staff to enhance sensitivity about spiritual concerns for patients and family members experiencing terminal illness and loss. Conducts religious services in the hospital chapel.

  • Accountable to the organizational mission, core vision and values. Adheres and acts in accordance with Seventh-day Adventist principles and the mission and values of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Performs mission and culture-oriented duties including delivering culture and devotional talks, conducting devotionals for huddles and meetings, and incorporating Seventh-day Adventist interpretation of scripture.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
