  • Lead or contribute to development cycles of new consumable products, including process definition, process development, equipment optimization, and metrology

  • Define product-level specifications and requirements, and translate them to critical parameter management at a physical level in the process

  • Implement model systems to reduce cycles of learning and time of process development

  • Work with equipment vendors and foundries on requirement management, specification control, and prototyping of novel process workflow

  • Work with cross-functional teams to scale prototype processes to pilot and production scale

  • Define and implement process controls, in-line monitoring, and metrology for QA

  • Deep dive on failure analysis and lead both short term containment and permanent solutions

  • Data analysis of trends in yield and performance tied to process work flow; provide guidance on yield improvement and cost reduction over time

  • Mentor others in the related areas of process work flow


  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in process development and integration of manufacturing operations

  • Experienced in the development and ramp to production of novel manufacturing processes

  • Experienced in a range of device assembly manufacturing techniques with a particular attention to microfluidic devices, plastic joining techniques, liquid handling, and adhesive bonding. Additional experience with wafer level processes including wafer bonding is appreciated

  • Hands-on experience working with and optimizing automated manufacturing equipment

  • Experience with micro-electronics and MEMS package level assembly techniques a plus

  • Experience with implementation of lean manufacturing concepts a plus

  • Ability to design DOEs and execute complex process experiments and statistical analysis

  • Ability to effectively work with engineers and scientists to diagnose and fix yield and process quality issues

  • Ability to relate basic material, physical characteristics, and fabrication variations to performance

  • Strong interdepartmental communication skills required

  • Collaborates, builds relationships and influences team members to work toward common goals

  • Excellent written and oral communication and experienced presentation skills

We have an exciting opportunity for a Process Engineer I located in San Diego,CA . In this role, you will provide technical expertise and tactical coordination for successful implementation of components, processes and equipment for product development and/or production. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Design and implementation of manufacturing processes from the laboratory and concept stage through pilot plant and manufacturing scale-up * Improvement of current manufacturing processes. * Responsible for identifying and implementing improvements to both day to day operations and high-level systematic changes associated with ensuring all processes and functions come together to achieve throughput and quality goals. * Identify failure modes in production and drive/complete investigations/implementations from both a "disposition of material" and "systematic improvement" standpoint. * Responsible for characterization of relationships between process inputs, outputs and final device performance. * Resident expert in tying together the multiple aspects/processes of device manufacturing and understanding how all impact final device performance. * Responsible for sourcing and reducing process variability. * Interfaces with various departments to ensure processes and designs are compatible for new product technology transfer and to establish future process and equipment automation technology. * Monitors process capabilities and performance through standard statistical process control and analysis methods. * Coordinates the execution of process studies and ensures that all studies are captured in the department's repository. * Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Acts as advisor and/or supervises subordinates in solving technical problems. Frequently interacts with departments, peers management and scientists. * Plans, designs, and coordinates biological, chemical, process and equipment capability experiments as they relate to new or existing equipment, processes and devices. * Leads major projects in process improvement and innovation, including scheduling, budgeting and implementation. Reports status of projects by using established project management methods like task lists, resource planning, expenditure tracking, and time charts. Generates and maintains project records including technical specifications and process studies and reports. * Perform validation (IQ, OQ, PQ) of new and existing processes/equipment to improve yield, product performance and/or to introduce new materials. Assembles project teams based on the required skill required for each project. * Composes test and performance specifications and operating procedures. * Researches alternate methods of accomplishing design criteria and performance specifications. Recommends to management options and provides analysis to base performance and financial decisions on. * Coordinates performance tests for evaluation of processes. * Directs the efforts of junior engineering staff on projects or tasks, as necessary. * Coordinates tasks with other departments, including production, quality assurance, marketing, rapid prototyping, etc. Supports process transfers to manufacturing, including scale up, procedures, training, start-up and validation support. * Work involving blood or other potentially infectious materials may be required. * Carries out duties in compliance with established business policies. * Demonstrates commitment to the development, implementation and effectiveness of Alere Quality Management System per ISO, FDA, and other regulatory agencies. * Responsible for exhibiting professional behavior with both internal/external business associates that reflects positively on the company and is consistent with the company's policies and practices. * Understands and is aware of the quality consequences which may occur from the improper performance of their specific job.
