Under general supervision, the Staff Advisor will provide in-depth, wide ranging and holistic advising to students intending to apply to health professions schools.

Provide pre-health advising, collaborate with UC Davis organizations and with organizations outside of campus, and assist in generating information for the website and marketing.

THIS CONTRACT APPOINTMENT WILL END 1 YEAR FROM THE DATE OF HIRE WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF EXTENSION OR BECOMING CAREER BASED ON BUDGET AVAILABILITY.

Physical Demands:

Work at a desk for extended periods of time.

Carry materials including a laptop weighing up to 25 lbs, to events across campus. A handcart is available.

Work Environment:

Arrange own transportation to attend meetings and events.

Work flexible schedule including evenings, weekends to meet operational and student needs.

Required to work at College of Biological Sciences commencement.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in student advising, counseling, science or related field and/or equivalent education, training and experience.

Knowledge and experience with student development theories, counseling processes, learning styles, and skill set development techniques.

Knowledge and experience with admissions processes and requirements for a wide range of health profession programs to match students' competencies and skills with those desired by schools.

Presentation, public speaking and organizational skills.

Experience using interpersonal and communication skills to successfully engage a population of students from highly diverse backgrounds with a broad range of complex counseling issues in an academic research environment.

Experience coordinating large scale events to meet students' needs including collaborating with constituents on a variety of shared goals.

Creative thinking and analytical skills to develop processes for virtual advising; use technology to advance advising techniques; and to assess current and future advising approaches.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working within an Admissions office at a professional health school.

This position is essential to ensure compliance with Federal immigration regulations, UC Davis and SISS policies and procedures. Advises on policy implementation guidelines and serves as a campus resource. Assists with analysis, revisions and implementation of policies and procedures related to F/J students and dependents. Collects, manages, analyzes, and maintains the integrity of and timely Federally mandated reporting for 6000+ F1/J1 students per year, including actively working with and maintaining student records related to work authorization for up to 6 years after graduation. Physical Demands: Maneuver files and materials weighing up to 25 lbs. Work Environment: Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident to be in compliance with U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations to function as a DSO and ARO. Experience using analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills to exercise independent judgment in complex situations, recognizing political ramifications and/or consequences of situations in relation to self, unit, and/or institution; analyzing the impact of actions and situations. Demonstrated experience in effective public speaking and presenting to small and large audiences including non-native English speakers. Demonstrated experience using computer programs such as Microsoft Excel and Word, and computer databases used to manage international students, such as fsaATLAS, Sunapsis, or others. Demonstrated ability as an effective team member who is able to develop working relationships to achieve organizational objectives. Ability to write in English to clearly convey complex information, and to logically and plainly support a request. Demonstrated experience working with government agency personnel to resolve international student issues such as DMV, SSA, FBI, ICE, USCIS. Skills to exercise independent judgment in a counseling setting when working with students, spouses, faculty and staff. Interpersonal communication and effective listening skills to interact positively and cooperatively with students, parents, faculty, administrators, staff and the general public, including international and multicultural constituencies.
