Overview

The Staff Accountant is responsible for ensuring compliance with internal controls and executing general accounting activities, including the day-to-day maintenance of a complete and accurate general ledger and in preparing financial statements and reports. TDS Telecom has a complex structure with over one hundred legal entities. Accountants are assigned responsibility for multiple legal entities across all TDS Telecom business segments. (e.g. Wireline, Cable and HMS.) Specific responsibilities may vary depending upon assignment.

Responsibilities

Accurate application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) (including regulatory specific accounting guidance)

  • Complete understanding and application of GAAP to the revenue, fixed asset, treasury, and general accounting functions.

  • Reviews and verifies the accuracy of account coding.

  • Prepares journal entries, maintains and reconciles ledger and sub-ledger accounts.

  • Maintain Fixed Asset records.

  • Provide income and transaction tax support.

  • Prepare and analyze monthly income and balance sheet statements which will be used for internal and external reporting purposes.

  • Respond to financial inquiries; provide requested information for use in effective management of the business and/or meeting external reporting needs.

  • Understand and adhere to TDS Telecom policies and procedures

  • Adhere to controls and standard business practices.

  • Escalate non-compliance issues when identified.

  • Safeguard company assets (cash, fixed assets, inventory).Financial reporting

  • Provide and effectively communicate financial information for internal and external audit.

  • Prepare certain external regulatory filings and reporting.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Participates on cross-functional teams as required (e.g. acquisition/merger support, billing conversion).

  • Identify business process improvement opportunities; assist in development and implementation of effective solutions.

  • Performs special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting -OR- 4+ year's professional work experience.

Other Qualifications

  • CPA certification preferred.

  • Proficient with computers and various software packages utilized within TDS (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite, Windows Environment, etc.).

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and work with others in a team environment.

  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail; strong analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Accurate application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Strong organization skills; ability to work effectively under multiple, and often changing priorities.

  • Consistently demonstrates a professional image and positive attitude.

The Staff Accountant will perform accounting activities in the areas of general ledger and financial reporting, expense analysis, inventory, capital projects, audit, and other related functions. Responsibilities Include: * Performs general ledger responsibilities including analytical review of expenses, accruals, etc. and related journal entries. * Assists with month-end closing activities for several Covance companies. * Prepares monthly financial reports, quarterly SEC schedules and other financial schedules or analyses as assigned. * Analyzes budgets vs. actual performance data; and assists with interpretation of variances. Completes monthly account reconciliations, identify key causes of variances and drive resolution of outstanding items. * Monitors inventory transactions and collaborates with operational managers to reconcile inventory ledger * Prepares annual tax schedules as required by Corporate. * Performs measures to monitor and control capital expenditures and fixed assets. * Assists with preparation of quarterly fluctuation analysis (income statement & balance sheet). * Assists with the completion of work requirements for all external, internal, and special audits. * Performs Sarbanes Oxley documentation and controls testing. * Makes recommendations for improvements in processes and/or quality of information reported and assists with implementation of action plans. * Performs other related duties or special projects as assigned.
