Staff Accountant

Position Summary:

The Staff Accountant position maintains and controls the general ledger accounts and is essential to the operations of the Finance Department. With matrix-ed reporting to the Assistant Controller and Accounting Manager, the Staff Accountant will prepare financial statements, provide assistance in developing and ensuring maintenance of cross-functional and departmental budgets and will assist with the generation and preparation of monthly financial reports. The Staff Accountant will also serve as the first line of defense for accounting issues and adherence to internal controls.

Job Description:

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares journal entries by maintain records and files and prepares reconciliations for month-end close

  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts for various financial statement areas

  • Assist in preparation of weekly Cash Forecast to provide to Treasurer

  • Prepare weekly and monthly Bank Reconciliations

  • Assisting with monthly, quarterly and year-end closings

  • Assist and support annual SOC 1, SOC 2, Quarterly and Annual Stat filings and Financial Statement Audits

  • Track Capital Expenditures and maintain depreciation schedule

  • Participate in internal control initiatives, including compliance with monthly control procedures and process documentation

  • Work cross-functionally with other corporate departments including, financial operations, actuarial and pricing, and various other selling and administrative areas

  • Provide support on various ad-hoc projects

Experience, Qualifications, and Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required

  • 2-3 years' accounting experience required

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite including MS Excel

  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize to meet deadlines

  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment

  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills with ability to handle multiple projects at one time

  • Knowledge of financial record-keeping procedures

  • Working knowledge of ERP systems

  • Required to pass a credit check

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, preparing journal entries, maintaining balance sheet ledgers, and various account reconciliation and analysis. This job will also support various functions of the assigned department(s). In this job, you will: All job duties may or may not be performed by all job incumbents, may vary dependent on assigned department. * Assist with month and year-end closings and reporting (may include reconciliation and analyzing of general ledgers and subsidiary ledgers to general ledger, analysis of variances in income statements and balance sheet accounts, recording accruals and prepays, documenting balances and variances from profit and loss as appropriate for management review). * Maintain daily and/or recurring accounting transactions (i.e. journal entries, accruals, and prepaid schedules). * May file property tax returns with appropriate taxing entities and establish appropriate monthly accruals. * Review and reconcile accounts payable and receivable accounts. * Prepare, analyze and communicate findings on various reports (i.e. management requests, regulatory compliance, and statistical). * Assist with various audits (may involve preparing audit schedules, and working with external and government auditing agencies). * Assist with daily tasks and special projects as requested. * Performance and documentation of internal processes and reviews to meet various regulatory compliance requirements. * Assist in preparation of annual reinsurance presentations. * Assist in preparation of rating agency presentations. * Work towards a greater understanding of Statutory and G.A.A.P. accounting practices and procedures as respect to CGB Insurance Company with the goal of additional cross training in department activities. * Assist with preparing and filing various annual state required forms by the filing deadlines. Here's what you'll need to be considered: Education Required - Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Experience Required - None. Preferred - Experience in related industry. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite; strong use of database and spreadsheet applications (Excel). * Working knowledge of the theory and practice of accounting (i.e. fixed assets, receivables, cash processes, reconciliation, financial statements). * Basic knowledge of accounting and financial software programs. Previous experience with Great Plains a plus. * Basic knowledge of sales and tax use. * Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of people within and outside the organization. * Strong analytical skills. * Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with ability to remain flexible to changing priorities. * Strong attention to detail. * Ability to prepare clear and concise oral and written reports. * Ability to work effectively both autonomously and within a team environment.
