Summary

The Staff Accountant is responsible for various functions in the Business Services department including journal entries, account reconciliations, completion of analytical reports and providing financial administrative services to the University community. This individual will report to the Director of Accounting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Record monthly journal accrual entries in the general ledger as part of the month-end close process.

  • Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations, including but not limited to bank account reconciliations.

  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reports.

  • Perform budget to actual analysis.

  • Provide operational support to the business services office such as assisting in inventory, refund processing, processing wire transfers, and reviewing expense reports.

  • Maintain start-up funds, intramural, and other internally designated accounts including setup of new accounts, responding to inquiries, monitoring expenditures, and producing period reports

  • Review and approve purchase requisitions for start-up, intramural and other internally designated general ledger accounts.

  • Review and process invoices for University's leasing program.

  • Prepare checks for deposit.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree required with preference for a degree in accounting or related field. 3-5 years of accounting or financial administration experience required. Preference for prior experience in an educational, non-profit, or healthcare setting.

Must have strong financial, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Must have working knowledge of accounting principles and ability to communicate principles, concepts, and outcomes effectively. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, organized, and with the ability to work effectively independently or as a member of a team.

Computer Skills

Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access) required. Experience with Concur desired.

Language Skills

Intermediate skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Reasoning Ability

Intermediate skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Mathematical Ability

Basic skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret bar graphs.
