Position Summary

The Staff Accountant I is responsible for the preparation and filing of a variety of regulatory reports required by applicable bank regulators including the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), Federal Reserve Bank (FRB), and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This position manages the Company's daily money position through the Federal Reserve Bank and other Bank correspondent accounts and is responsible for filing weekly regulatory reports. Assist with closing the monthly financial cycle and production of financial statements and other critical reports. Perform daily general ledger reconciliations for various critical and complex balance sheet accounts and assist with bank-wide financial certifications. Maintain other real estate owned property ledgers and associated reports. Assist Accounting Management with other complex accounting transactions and projects.

The following duties are intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities and ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Draft assigned portions of FDIC and Federal Reserve Bank call reports each quarter.

  • Draft assigned sections of SEC regulatory filings (10Q, 10K, and 8K forms).

  • Assist Accounting Management with closing the general ledger and production of monthly financial statements for all companies.

  • Complete all critical money desk processes daily.

  • Process Employee Corporate VISA expenditures each month.

  • Assist with financial statement audits and reviews.

  • Reconcile all investment accounts weekly and update assigned investment reports each quarter.

  • Assist with monthly financial certifications.

  • Communicate and process interest rate, payment, and mark to market entries related to interest rate swap transactions.

  • Perform daily reconciliations for critical accounts as assigned.

  • Balance other miscellaneous asset and liability accounts.

  • Maintain OREO trials and related reports. Maintain OREO files, by property. Prepare monthly and quarterly tax returns for the State of Washington.

  • Reconcile loans and upload charge-offs and recoveries in ALLL/CECL software.

  • Prepare miscellaneous asset quality reports.

  • Cross-train to provide back-up for the following critical functions:

  • Daily report production/morning procedures of Accounting Supervisor

  • Money desk processes

  • Accounts payable

  • Daily reconciliation of:

  • Core system balancing

  • Federal Reserve Bank, Correspondent Banks and clearing accounts (critical accounts).

  • FHLB correspondent bank, FHLB interest receivable and payable, suspense.

  • Corporate Credit Cards in Process

  • CDARs/ICS

  • Assist Accounting Management with projects and assignments.

  • Complete online, written and in-person compliance training within established timeframes.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in an accounting related field required.

  • Four years of related work experience may be substituted for the education requirement.

Experience

Staff Accountant I

  • One year of relevant accounting work experience. Financial institution experience preferred.

  • Related military education/experience may be used as a substitute for education or work experience.

Staff Accountant II

  • Three year of relevant accounting work experience. Financial institution experience preferred.

  • Related military education/experience may be used as a substitute for education or work experience.

Knowledge & Communication Skills

  • Knowledge of financial accounting principles and their application and general knowledge financial accounting authorities and their structure.

  • Strong account reconciliation skills and an entry level understanding of the effects of debits and credits are required.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

  • Develop and maintain job specific procedures.

  • Good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with employees, management, and auditors.

  • Must understand and have the ability to implement applicable compliance requirements.

Analytical & Decision Making Skills

  • Work is complex. Good analytical ability is required in order to review transactions and/or account balances and make reasonable assumptions and recommendations to Accounting Management.

  • Ability to research and resolve moderately complex and unique problems required.

  • Ability to make recommendations to increase efficiencies or improve procedures also required.

  • Ability to explain the reasons for correcting journal entries.

  • Assignments are received in the form of expected results with latitude provided on the method in reaching desired results.

  • Must be able to determine when to escalate problems to the Accounting Management.

Computer/Software/Other Equipment Skills

  • Proficient knowledge of MS Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Ability to operate standard office equipment such as PC, printer, fax/copier, and telephone.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • Work is performed in a professional office environment.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Economics, Management, Business Administration or a related discipline and three (3) years of professional accounting work experience. OR A certificate as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and three (3) years of professional accounting work experience. OR Associate's degree in Accounting, Economics, Management, Business Administration or a related discipline and five (5) years of professional accounting work experience. OR High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and seven (7) years of experience in accounting, payroll, or similar office responsibility.
