Position Title: Staff Accountant

Department: Accounting/Finance

Supervisor: VP Corporate Controller

FLSA Status: Exempt

Location: Corporate Center, Effingham, IL

Effective Date: March 5, 2020

Objective:

The Staff Accountant is responsible for general accounting and finance duties of the Bank, including, but not limited to the following financial processes financial reporting, regulatory reporting, general ledger accounting, fixed asset accounting, account reconciliations, investment securities accounting, and accounts payable.

Essential Duties:

  • Financial reporting and analysis, including preparation consolidated financial statements and footnotes in accordance with GAAP

  • Regulatory reporting, including preparation of the FDIC call report and other regulatory filings

  • General ledger accounting and deposit and loan-related accounting, including research to respond to inquiries from management, vendors, or employees which may include but not limited to extracting system data and utilize various means to provide professional responses

  • Support the monthly close process by preparing journal entries and completing month-end tasks

  • Prepare account reconciliations for general ledger accounts, internal deposit accounts, and correspondent bank accounts

  • Maintain and update the fixed asset accounting system

  • Assist with the accounts payable function, including reviewing invoices for appropriate documentation and approval prior to payment, prepaid expenses, accrued expenses, and 1099 preparation

  • Review and validate the allowance for loan and lease losses calculation

  • Investment securities accounting and back-office clearing of the Bank's investment portfolio

  • Assist in development and implementation of accounting policies and internal financial controls and procedures

Secondary Duties:

  • Coordinate and assist with external audits

  • Improve systems and procedures and initiate corrective actions

  • Communicate with customers, vendors, and employees in a courteous and professional manner

  • Other special projections/analyses as requested by management

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Advanced computer skills in in Microsoft Office (extensive experience with Excel), core systems, fixed asset software, and accounts payable software or the ability to adapt to new software

Work Schedule:

This position requires 40 hours each week with the majority of work being completed between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Some evenings are necessary to meet deadlines. Travel is minimal to meet with customers, go to branches, and attend conferences/training.

The employee is frequently required to sit, with some standing, walking, and reaching with hands and arms necessary. Minimal weight is lifted for this position, and clear, close vision with the ability to adjust focus is necessary.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting or commensurate experience
  • 2 years previous experience in an entry level staff accountant position or commensurate experience

Work Environment:

This job operates in an office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.
