Job Description

Investigate, evaluate, develop test protocols analyzing hydrolytic, mechanical, and thermal stability of hydrogen fuel cell sub-gasket polymer and seal plastic materials. Engineer and devise test protocols measuring bonding strength of adhesive used to bind layers of polymer films producing sub-gasket.

Develop test protocols for measuring mechanical strength, fatigue strength, viscoelastic properties and local hardness of sub-gasket substrate. Develop and analyze in-house lamination test protocol. Write Statement of Requirements (SOR) for sub-gasket including two polymer layers and one adhesive layer.

Define sub-gasket design requirements including manufacturing tolerances, material thickness variation, misalignment, and temperature effect. Develop Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulation technique, using Abaqus tool, Fortran programming language, and Python scripting interface for sub-gasket durability analysis to predict material lifetime, which is used for further structural optimization. Perform complex diagnostics and problem-solving, using Blister test stands, Instron equipment for tensile testing, dynamic mechanical analyzers, and accelerated degradation tests, to design, review and integrate tools to evaluate mechanical durability of sub-gasket material under cyclic loading.

Additional Job Description

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or related field, and two (2) years of experience as a Researcher, Engineer, Graduate Research Assistant, or related role. Must also have experience with: developing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulation technique, using Abaqus tool, Fortran programming language, and Python scripting interface for ionomer membrane materials or sub-gasket durability analysis to predict material lifetime.
