DESCRIPTION: Provide support and supervision for students with moderate to severe disabilities in special education and/or general education classes, including modifications of materials, consultation with teachers, direct instruction, life skills training as well as provide personal care / medical assistance as delegated by the School Nurse. Collect data and maintain student records. Must be able to work with difficult and sometimes physical students.
SALARY: Classified Grade J, $19.52 to $24.08 per hour, depending on recent relevant experience. 8.0 hours per day, Tuesday through Friday on the 9-month work schedule, paid over 12 months. Position is eligible for benefits.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with planning and instructing individual and small groups of students in all academic areas in inclusive classrooms.
- Supervise and instruct individual and small groups of students without certified teacher present for purposes of tutoring and other activities.
- Supervise students in the lunchroom, on the playground, and during other various student activities to ensure the safety and security of students.
- Prepare various material used in classrooms, including designing, copying, binding etc.
- Assist with student data collection that includes daily student work cum folders, portfolios, report cards, and recording assessment data.
- Administer tests to determine academic skill levels as directed by certified instructors.
- Provide direct instructional inclusion and assessment services to students with disabilities.
- Work as a part of a teacher team in the development and direction of the program including supervision of paraprofessionals and coordination with related services staff and teachers within the elementary school.
- Work with parents and agency personnel in coordinating needs for each student.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- CPR/First Aid certifications preferred.
- Must be able to get along with others, be flexible to change, and willing to work with multiple grade levels and teachers.
- Possess excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate with school staff, students and parents.
- Passion and desire to help students improve their literacy skills and other educational skills.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills helpful.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- 6 months to 2 years of experience working with students with disabilities preferred but not required.
- CPR and First Aid certification preferred at time of hire or able to obtain within 2 months of hire date.
- Skills in crisis management, flexibility, patience and ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions.
- Valid Colorado driver's license may be required within one month after hire. Training for Small Vehicle required by CDE for transporting students.
