Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems Division has an opening for a Sr. Principal Structures Design Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position is located in Redondo Beach, CA.
In this role you will:
Support upcoming Space programs and will participate in the resolution of complex mechanical design problems for space based platforms and missions involving composite and metallic structures.
Perform and lead mechanical design of structures and deployables.
Perform requirements definition, conceptual design, preliminary / layout, and detail design, drawing release, design review presentations, and support to fabrication.
Lead a multi-discipline work package including interfacing with customer, technical support, and directing and mentoring junior engineers.
Work closely with stress, manufacturing, materials and processes and test to develop design requirements, define structural load paths, develop CAD models and prepare engineering drawings to fabricate flight and structural test articles.
Provide leadership and oversight of Suppliers to verify/validate mechanical design requirements and ensure qualification/certification deliverables are provided and meet requirements.
Bachelor Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university with 9 years of industry engineering experience; OR Masters Degree in STEM with 7 years of industry engineering experience; OR PhD in STEM with 4 years of industry engineering experience
Experience with CAD modeling software
Working knowledge of engineering drawings and related Bill-of-Materials.
Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning &Tolerance applications (GD&T).
Working knowledge of tolerance stack-up analysis
Experience in Composite and/or Metallic Mechanical Design
Experience in supporting and/or leading in a design team
Candidate must have, and be able to maintain, at least ONE of the following active U.S. Government security clearances:
Dept of Defense Top Secret level with a background investigation date within 6 years
OR SCI access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within 5 year
Bachelor and/or Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and/or Aerospace
Experience working on Special Access Programs
Participation in multiple design cycles in spacecraft/aircraft development programs
Current SCI clearance
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, be skilled in use of the Microsoft Office software suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
