About the role

The Senior Vice President, R&D, is a key member of Cantel's executive leadership team, reporting to the CEO and will be based out of the company's Minneapolis offices. This role will have responsibility to oversee all projects related to research and the development of new and existing products as well as due diligence associated with acquisitions.

The role will work closely with executives leading other functional departments to develop and execute on a thoughtful, comprehensive plan to effectively meet Cantel's objectives for current and future products under development. This position will also play an important role in the due diligence process for licensing and/or acquisition targets. This role will work closely with marketing, regulatory affairs, manufacturing, quality and global commercial executives as well as other key functional departments to complete development of products currently in the pipeline and successfully bring them to market, as well as to continue to significantly expand Cantel's products through a focus on innovation and internal product development.

What you will do

  • Continue the momentum and improved morale established by the interim head of R&D (the SVP, General Counsel & Secretary) through focus on a few critical product development projects and hands-on attention to each individual on the team. Advance those products to commercial launch while also building the pipeline for future products.

    Develop a comprehensive innovation/R&D plan for Cantel with timeline and make or buy decisions that fit with the company's strategic plan, market share growth and financial targets. Provide a detailed plan outlining specific steps necessary for successful commercialization with agreed upon dates and resources needed to complete each milestone. Continue to advance the engineering and scientific talent of the company.

    Attract and retain the very highest caliber of research and development engineers and scientists. Build the bench of talent and technical competencies to be leveraged across the various market segments. Develop staffing requirements and assume responsibility for planning, recruiting, training and motivating the necessary team members around the world.

    Foster relationships with key universities to provide Cantel Medical with a diverse talent pipeline. Ensure Cantel has a robust New Product Development (NPD) process. Optimize NPD resources to execute current and future products in the development cycle.

    Assure detailed plans outline specific steps necessary for successful commercialization with agreed-upon dates and resources needed to complete each milestone. Communicate an engaging product development mission to the entire company to inspire proactive attention to this critical area within Cantel Medical. Provide technical leadership and vision by uncovering emerging markets for platform products, interpreting market requirements and providing the leadership necessary to meet the urgent milestones towards commercialization.

  • Maintain design control, change control and risk management processes to facilitate diligence in the engineering process and compliance to industry expectations. Provide technical leadership to ensure design, verification and validation of each product and its components are appropriate for approval and manufacturing.

    Collaborate closely with all functional areas necessary to aggressively advance products from proof-of-concept through validation and product launch. Serve as a technical expert relative to Cantel's global product platform and convincingly communicate difficult concepts to wide audiences in a cogent manner. Work closely with other Executive Leadership Team (ELT) members to effectively identify new intellectual property (IP) initiatives and translate those into new products and/or procedures.

    Coordinate the patent estate facilitating Cantel's IP strategy, partnering with legal to drive idea assessment and patent prosecution, proposing responses to competitive threats, and protecting company trade secrets. Instill discipline and process to the product development effort in order to provide timely completion of milestones, ensure compliance, assign appropriate resources, and remain within budget, while also fostering innovation and teamwork throughout the company.

What we are looking for

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering. Experience in leading R&D for another similar sized company within the medical device space with a large, diverse product line such as Cantel's, which includes software, electromechanical equipment, plastics, sterile chemistry and disposables, and doing so with resources spread across numerous locations in the US and Europe.

    Capable of assuming the technical hands-on leadership of the R&D team through consistent development, directing them to reach progressive milestones in a timely and cost-effective manner. Leading launches of similar products in the United States and around the world. Effective team builder and problem solver, exhibiting a collaborative, hands on management style and the ability to bring out the best in people through example A strong technical and business mind; able to visualize future products that fit Cantel's strategy and financial objectives.

    Proven expertise integrating acquired companies into one cohesive team will be extremely advantageous. Excellent communicator who radiates compassion, integrity and loyalty to Cantel and its respective customers, partners, shareholders, and employees. Think strategically to differentiate between "make or buy" opportunities, and determine appropriate recommendations for the business/product portfolio.

    Extensive product development experience, as well as licensing, M&A and working through third-party developers. Well-versed in all aspects of Classes I and II medical device development, validation and commercialization. Shows a well-organized strategic product development process including all steps from proof-of-product concept through validation and product launch including appropriate FDA and other global regulatory approval processes.

Preferred: Advanced scientific degree and/or MBA Experience in chemical development and manufacturing
