With the keyboard as your catalyst, you will take part in designing, implementing, testing and R&D of features used by millions with minimal direction. You'll be challenged to wear many hats as you switch from programming for web, mobile, and API -- all while ensuring your work is testable and scalable. Integrated into a Scrum team, you will collaborate with our Tech Leads, Product Managers and other talented engineers. * 4-year degree in Computer Science or similar * 4+ years of experience working as a software developer * Outstanding problem solving and analytical skills * Good communicator (written and verbal) and comfortable discussing software architecture for the features you'll propose and be able to implement them * Ability to contribute to a technical discussion mirrors your ability to listen and learn from your peers * Experience working on the full web application stack * You're not a sysadmin but you know more than enough to be dangerous You are a knowledgeable Sr. Software Engineer; skilled in: * An in-depth understanding of how RESTful applications work * Solid Object-Oriented development skills * Strong Java and JavaScript or similar skills * You're using SQL daily; PostgreSQL is a plus * Common front-end technologies such as Pug, Bower/NPM, Grunt, Angular, etc. * Unit Testing and how to write a good unit test You should at least be familiar with: * Agile Scrum or Kanban methodologies * Scrum tools (Jira, Confluence, etc.) * Git with pull requests * Linux and strong with CLI * How TCP/IP works * Continuous Integration / Delivery (TeamCity, Jenkins, etc.) * Microsoft Teams, Slack or similar communication tools These things are a bonus: * Hibernate / JPA * Spring or Spring Boot * Cassandra / Redis * AWS/SNS/SQS/RDS * Ansible * Maven / Gradle Our technology. Our Java/Kotlin-based REST API is built on Spring Boot and Hibernate which serves traffic to both web and mobile consumers. We're using a combination of both PostgreSQL, Cassandra and Redis. Redis, specifically, is used extensively in a distributed locking system, responsible for supporting real-time data processing. All of this uses Amazon Web Services extensively for stability and high availability. We practice Continuous Integration using TeamCity; as a result we have continual smaller releases to our environments (Development, QA, Staging, Production), with integrated unit tests and code coverage analysis while eliminating the risk taken on with only a few large releases/product updates. In a typical day you may: * Attend Scrum team meetings with members locally and across the world * Collaborate with other functional groups like design, product, technical implementation as well as our global engineering teams * Work closely with the Product team and help define user stories and estimates * With minimal supervision handle all aspects of moderately complex full stack web development projects including: * Database modeling and writing fairly complex SQL queries * Design and document RESTful APIs under an MVC architecture * Develop frontend solutions utilizing AngularJS/Angular * Write automated tests * Troubleshoot and investigate issues across our platform * Check on the health of applications and models in New Relic * Mentor and collaborate with junior software engineers * Perform code reviews for your teammates * Submit well-formed pull requests * Work on a product that changes people's lives * Have fun while doing all the above Virgin Pulse Appleton WI
