Ascend Performance Materials is a rapidly growing global leader in the production of Polyamide 6,6, and we are seeking a Sr. Engineer of Compound Process Technology with proven capabilities to join our strong and competent team of industry professionals.

As a member of Ascend Performance Material's technology organization, the Compound Process Technology position will be responsible to support all global compound operations for the nylon engineering plastics business. The position serves as the resident expert for twin screw compounding operations, and will be responsible to collaborate with plant operations to drive improvements in all Ascend compound operations with respect to Quality, Productivity, and Safety. Furthermore, the Process Technology position will be responsible to work with the product technology organization to lead all relevant process development aspects from pilot to full commercial scale.

Networking globally with various engineering organizations and equipment vendors, this Sr. Engineering position will understand the latest industry trends and will translate that knowledge into an applied growth strategy for twin screw compounding. The successful candidate will consistently demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit by not just thinking, but working "outside the box".

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Compound Process Technology position has a variety of job responsibilities, including:

  • Identify and assess new/advanced compounding technologies to enable new product technology launch or to improve overall plant performance.

  • Lead compound process and product development trials on R&D, scale-up and plant assets.

  • Develop processes and product specifications in-house and at all tolling locations for new product introductions.

  • Provide input to design packages for future capacity expansions at all compounding locations for Ascend.

  • Identify and initiate continuous improvement projects.

  • Monitor the balance between compound business demand and overall production capacity and advocate an effective asset growth strategy.

  • Support products and processes focused on improving KPIs such as yields, on stream times, equipment reliability, etc.

  • Utilize root cause analysis methods to problem solve compound process issues.

  • Conduct process and equipment audits to review critical product characteristics and critical process variables and implement sustainable corrective actions for process upsets.

  • Maintain engineering level relationships within targeted equipment vendor companies.

  • Planning and leading high level projects from concept to commercialization using a structured stage gate process

  • Monitoring competitive activities and emerging technologies.

  • Providing detailed information to senior executives in a precise and accurate manner.

  • Influencing business asset strategy with technology.

TEAM

  • This position will be an integral part of the Ascend global technology organization and will serve as the in-house twin screw compounding expert for Ascend's engineering plastics business.

  • Integration and collaboration with operations teams both at Ascend and at tollers will be important.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

The successful Sr. Engineering candidate will have a degree in a relevant engineering discipline (chemical preferred):

  • 10+ years industrial experience with an in-depth and proven knowledge of twin screw compounding of engineering plastics (nylon preferred)
  • Experience leading teams of highly technical individuals constantly interfacing across multiple business functions

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Industry experience in plastics extrusion processes, preferably twin screw compounding of engineering plastics.

  • In depth knowledge of typical additive and reinforcement technologies utilized in engineering plastic products (glass fiber, mineral fillers, impact modifiers, flame retardants, etc.).

  • Familiar with principles of statistical analysis of data and application to process development and process improvement.

  • Preferred candidate will have experience with six sigma training and methodology.

  • Experience in delivering complex technical presentations to large groups of non-technical executives.

  • Experience utilizing gated project management systems preferred.

  • In depth knowledge of typical plastic compound processes and secondary operations associated with the engineering plastics industry.

  • Must be a strategic and innovative thinker with strong organizational and people development skills.

Process design engineers develop the best engineering solutions for new capital projects and process improvement ideas. Job Description: The Process Design Engineer will be responsible for scoping, designing and following the execution, and commissioning phases for projects that add capabilities, improve quality, or increase production capacity. The role is focused on finding creative solutions to challenges, providing rapid implementation timetables while achieving the best alignment with customer and business needs at lowest cost. The role will focus on: * Integration as part of a project team with project leaders, manufacturing staff and Technology engineers. * Develop flow schemes to determine mass and energy balances, control logic, and equipment specifications. * Model processes as part of the overall sizing/design processes. * Continued involvement in project execution and start up beyond the design phase. * Interacting with leading internal and external experts, vendors, and other outside consultants to develop and implement improvements * Providing technical guidance on areas of expertise to plant manufacturing and engineering organizations. * Performing process HAZOP's, RCA's, FMEA's, and PSR's Essential Functions: * Manage and maintain key capacity of conventional nylon polymerization or chemical intermediates manufacturing processes by: * Developing projects for low cost routes to debottleneck capacity * Maximizing throughput rate at equivalent quality * Optimizing operation for conversion costs * Proactively manage project milestone delivery, identify potential obstacles and issues, devise contingency plans, and engage stakeholders at necessary decision points * Oversee development of process flow diagrams, heat & mass balances, piping & instrument diagrams, and economic estimates from initial concept to final design * Manage the project stage gate process with Six Sigma rigor and statistical methodology and use tools to drive efficiency across all programs * Manage internal resources, vendors, consultants, and contract resources to accomplish project goals * Maintain product and company reputation by complying with federal and state regulations * Maintain safe and clean working environment by enforcing procedures, rules, and regulations * Monitor work for compliance to applicable codes and accepted engineering practices and standards Required Skills: * Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. Advanced degree considered a plus. * 3 + years Process Design experience * Ability to interface, orally and in writing, with many levels of employees of various disciplines within various departments and all other internal and external contacts. * Strong analytical and technical skills, ability to solve complex problems, ability to innovate, and a strategic business perspective. * Ability to work with interdisciplinary and cross-functional teams to take a concept to plant implementation. * Broad knowledge of chemical unit operations including reactions, separations, environmental controls and so forth. Knowledge of computer systems and software related to process control, optimization and simulation. * Experience with Aspen, HYSYS, Fathom, HTRI, AFT Arrow, Process Explorer, Provox, AIM Station, DMACS, or similar packages is needed. * This job may require occasional travel for vendor visits and internal meetings.
