Position: Senior Technical Program Manager

Reports To: VP of Program Management

Location: Livonia, MI

A123 Systems, LLC is a leading developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries and battery systems for the transportation and commercial markets.

Primary responsibilities

  • Develop Project's Strategic Plan, Project Schedule, and Project Budget in order to meet Customer Requirements

  • Own Program Execution from Kickoff through successful PPAP Approval and subsequent handover to Serial Production Team

  • Own Customer 'Project Execution' technical relationship from Kickoff through successful PPAP Approval

  • Work with Sales who owns commercial relationship with customer

  • Capture Scope Changes by re-quote to customer to improve Gross Margin over time

  • Own Customer requested changes during volume production through PPAP Approval of changes; re-start project by defining a project in terms of defining scope, cost, timing, risk, update Business Case, seek approval from management for budget and resources

  • Maintain strong alignment across the internal functional organization

  • Manage Requirements and Changes to Project Assumptions by orchestrating meetings, providing written communications as follow-up, and ensuring that the spirit of APQP is always maintained (simultaneous development of product and process)

  • Manage Design to Cost efforts through cross-functional alignment of efforts

  • Develop and manage project budgets; justify and document variances

  • Manage sequenced activities in support of AIAG Automotive APQP standard using A123 Phase Gate Process

  • Drive overall customer satisfaction by demonstrating World Class Project Management

  • Implement VAVE initiatives by driving methodical change management procedures while managing risk to cost, timing, quality, and customer satisfaction

  • Drive successful implementation of ASPICE and ISO-26262 (Functional Safety) as applicable to customer agreed project scope by ensuring alignment in assumptions and activities between Engineering and Program Management

  • Highlight systemic issues, propose solutions, and drive continuous improvement when feasible

  • Support Project Reporting Process as defined by management

  • Actively escalate Risks, propose contingency plans, manage contingency plans, foster 'no surprises' mentality

  • Ensure that System Level Tradeoffs are appropriately analyzed in order to achieve acceptable risk at optimal costs and profitability

  • Utilize tools identified by the Program Management Office for issues / risk management, schedule creation and maintenance, project data management and reporting, as required

  • Drive towards rapid identification and resolution of any and all key performance, cost and timing issues regardless of where the issue originates (customer, engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply base, etc)

  • Drive Project Requirements relevant to ASPICE in order to achieve corporate directives and customer specific requirements

  • Ability to influence others in multi-cultural environment where project teams are disbursed across time zones

  • Strong technical background with focus on electrical / mechanical / software products / systems

  • Business / financial acumen

  • Familiarity with ASPICE

  • Familiarity with ISO-26262 Functional Safety Standard

  • Expert command of the Automotive Development Process / APQP process

  • Ability to mentor others

  • Ability to thrive within a rapidly changing / growing matrix organization

  • Experience in developing and installing process disciplines

Education / Experience

  • Education: BSEE required with MS / MBA optional

  • Certifications: PMP Strongly Preferred but not required; demonstrated utilization of PMI PMBOK principles can be used as a surrogate

  • Total years of Experience Required: ~15+ yrs

  • Industry Experience Required: 10+ yrs at Automotive Tier 1 supplier

  • Other Experience: 5+ yrs direct or matrix management of people

  • Technical Experience: Electronics Devices requiring ISO-26262 and/or ASPICE Compliance / Hybrid Electric Vehicles / Alternative Energy / Batteries
