Job Title: Sr. Systems Engineer I

Job Summary

Responsible for a broad range of tasks including the administration, installation and configuration of various middleware products running in Linux and OpenShift Kubernates environment. The individual in this position interacts closely with product vendors and service providers and personnel from various IT departments including Application Development, Operations, Network, and Enterprise Architects. Systems Engineers are assigned to the most complex systems, projects and initiatives. The individual maintains support processes, identifies issues, resolves problems, provides training and serves as a technical resource for other IT System Administrators and System Engineers.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities:
  • Plans and implements service request work and has a significant role in the delegation of responsibilities. Works under broad direction. Work is often self-initiated. Is fully accountable for meeting allocated technical objectives.

  • Establishes milestones for project related work and makes decisions which impact the success of projects and team objectives. Analyzes, designs, plans, executes and evaluates work to time, cost, and quality targets.

  • Investigates and resolves complex problems requiring an understanding of the relationship between own specialism and wider customer/organizational requirements. Influences organization, customers, suppliers, partners, and peers on the contribution of his own specialism.

  • Performs an extensive range of complex technical or professional work activities. Undertakes work which requires the application of fundamental IT principles in a wide and open unpredictable range of contexts.

  • Maintains an awareness of developments in the industry. Takes initiative to keep skills up to date. Mentors colleagues.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution required in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Systems/Technology or related major field of study.
  • 5 or more years of experience required in systems engineering/administration.

Equivalent Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma/GED
  • 7 or more years of experience required in systems engineering/administration.

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to meeting the above qualifications, any of the following are preferred:

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution required in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Systems/Technology or related major field of study.
  • 3 or more years of experience required in systems engineering/administration.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience working with the latest versions of IBM WebSphere Products, Apache, Tomcat, Jboss, IBM HTTP server.

  • Support and troubleshoot Liberty/Angular/Springboot applications running in Kubernetes and Multi-Cloud environment.

  • Hands-on experience administering, architecting and troubleshooting middleware products.

  • Experience in wsadmin, jython/python, linux Shell/Bash scripting. UNIX shell and UNIX administration.

  • Developing and maintaining Ansible playbooks for automation.

  • Experience with collaboration using GIT.

  • Working knowledge of DevOps tools Jenkins and Spinnaker.

  • Experience with Wireshark or other networking tools for troubleshooting issues.

  • Familiarity with administering hybrid cloud environments in AWS, Azure, GCP.

  • Familiarity with load balancer rules in CITRIX NetScaler.

  • Nice to have: Kafka Administration, Elastic Stack Administration, Helm development and Hashicop Vault

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: A valid driver's license is required prior to employment and must be maintained during employment Except for promotions of regular JEA employees into this position, applicants must provide proof of passing the EIT or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam developed by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) prior to employment. Proof of a Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by a State Board of Professional Engineers can be substituted for the EIT or FE requirement. All regular employees of JEA promoted into this classification after August 1, 2015 will be required to provide proof of passing the EIT or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam issued by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers.
