As a Systems Engineer, you will be using your skills and expertise to research, architect, model, simulate, test, certify and improve cutting edge products and services. You'll be developing complex system architectures within contextual modeling platforms, ushering them from operational concept through preliminary and detailed design, simulation, and test using progressive tools. As a cross-functional engineer, you are in charge of system-level ownership of new products and processes through the product lifecycle.

Sierra Space, based in Louisville, Colorado with operations in Madison, Wisconsin, Durham, North Carolina, and Kennedy Space Center, Florida, designs and manufactures advanced spacecraft, satellites, propulsion and environmental systems, spacecraft subsystems and components for the U.S. government (including NASA), commercial customers and international organizations.

Sierra Space is seeking a Sr. Systems Engineer - Ground Segment Lead to join our expanding Orbital Mission Systems team. The Ground Segment Lead will be part of the Ground Integrated Product Team (IPT) and head a team of engineers as they specify, integrate and test a ground control element for a novel space platform. The successful candidate should possess deep knowledge of ground control elements for spacecraft, vehicle to ground interfaces, and commercial and government terrestrial control, communication, and data networks. The candidate should demonstrate familiarity with commercial and government GEPs, SATCOM networks, mission control facilities and software to perform effective make-buy trades that enable rapid development to cost.

Job duties will include:

  • Deriving Ground Segment requirements and interfaces, developing segment CONOPS, performing technical trades, leading segment-level technical design efforts, and delivering an effective Ground Segment.

  • Communication of Ground Segment technical products to peers, leadership and customers in electronic, presented and documented forms.

  • Drafting supplier SOWs, specifications and managing suppliers in concert with the supply chain management team as required.

  • Integration of ground software and hardware into SoftSat and FlatSat environments.

  • Leading ground segment V&V activities.

Must-haves:

  • Bachelor's of Science degree in System Engineering or related discipline and typically 10 or more years of relevant experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering principles and practices

  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary design and development teams

  • Thorough understanding of requirements management, functional requirements parsing, derivation, and allocation; systems design, systems integration, technical risk identification and management strategies, and Verification and Validation (V&V) principles

Preferred:

  • Typically 4-6 years of relevant experience in a team leadership role, especially in ground segment development.

  • Master's degree or higher in related field of study.

  • Broad knowledge of commercial and government GEPs, SATCOM and terrestrial networks, mission control facilities and software.

  • Specific knowledge of government networks for spacecraft control, such as USSF SCN or SC2.

  • Familiarity with the Risk Management Framework and US Government cybersecurity requirements for ground system architectures and software development.

  • Proficiency in working as part of a scrum team, managing Jira stories, sprint planning, and tracking burndown/up.

  • Demonstrated experience with Requirements Management and Model Based Systems Engineering tools and techniques, such as DOORS, CAMEO EA, Rhapsody, Matlab and SysML..

  • Familiarity with preparation and development of project estimates, technical proposals, and program cost and schedule management.

  • Experience across all phases of the program development lifecycle, from capture through design, implementation and test.

  • Experience or certification in INCOSE standards.

  • Background in the Aerospace and Defense Industry.

  • An active Secret U.S. Security Clearance preferred .

  • Ability to work and communicate with technical and specialty subject matter expert engineers across segment boundaries to define functional requirements and interfaces.

  • Superb communication and writing skills.

  • Great attitude with the ability to collaborate effectively on multidisciplinary teams to solve hard problems in a rapid development environment.

Physical/Mental/Emotional Requirements:

  • Frequently walk, sit, stand, climb stairs and steps

  • Frequently repeat same hand, arm, and finger motion many times to include finger and hand dexterity

  • Rarely lifting or carrying up to 20 lbs.

Working Conditions:

  • Rarely exposed to outdoor elements (high/low temperatures, sun, rain/snow, etc.)

  • Rarely exposed to fumes or hazardous chemicals/materials

  • Rarely exposed to loud noises

Estimated Starting Salary Range:

$120,552.10 - $180,828.15

Sierra Space offers annual incentive pay based upon performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
