This position is within American Snuff Company the nations second- largest manufacturer of smokeless tobacco products. Its leading brands are Grizzly and Kodiak.
American Snuff Company is seeking a Fermentation Scientist/Engineer to lead research and development projects and support operations in Clarksville, TN.
The individual must be capable of developing and planning complex research projects and delivering results against product and process development goals operating as a fermentation subject matter expert while leading other scientists. This individual must be able to perform in a highly diverse, multi-functional environment.
This individual must be able to clearly communicate and collaborate on projects with various functions, including but not limited to: Manufacturing, R&D, Quality, and Scientific & Regulatory Affairs at different locations to solve problems, provide technical insight, and develop scientific measures to ensure that development and production efforts meet regulatory requirements.
Foundational knowledge of the requirements in a regulated industry; especially HACCP principles and GmP.
Some domestic travel will be required.
Required Knowledge and Experience:
Minimum MS/BS in Biochemical, Chemical Engineering, or closely related field. Ph.D. preferred.
Minimum five years' experience with fermentation process development and industrial experience with full scale operations
Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and effectively interpret microbiological and chemical data to make timely decisions
Excellent project management, team-work, and leadership skills
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate the science of fermentation to company leadership and public health regulators
Demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the fermentation sciences or related fields
Proficient in Microsoft Office software
Understand and support IQ, OQ and PQ validation requirements
Principal Duties & Responsibilities include:
The scientist must exhibit project management and technical leadership skills with minimal guidance. He/she will be expected to design, collaborate and execute multiple projects with changing priorities and aggressive timelines. He/she must be a self-starter and demonstrate a high-level of competency in one or more fermentation related sciences.
The incumbent will collaborate across numerous internal functions/multiple locations including R&D, Operations, Regulatory as well as other areas to deliver successful outcomes within specified timelines.
He/she will be expected to provide technical leadership in corporate initiatives, including cost reduction efforts, manufacturing efficiencies, product development and other product related scenarios.
He/she will be expected to document and present research findings and recommendations to scientists, non-scientist executives, operating plant personnel, engineers, government regulators and other colleagues in a concise manner
Prepare and review internal reports, and research papers, and provide recommendations based on proven experience.
Utilize and stay abreast of State of the Art techniques for forward thinking research applications in the operations environment.
Identify fundamentals of fermentation processes, modes of fermentation, and understand the principles of the upstream and downstream operational impacts
Utilize fermentation science, engineering, and manufacturing process knowledge to meet current business needs and develop new models for the future which align with anticipated regulatory requirements.
The ability to manage stairs unaided on a regular basis.
