Job Description

  • Investigates, creates, and validates new scientific methodologies used to control raw materials, production intermediates, and final products on highly critical projects. May be involved in pre-clinical, clinical, and/or post-marketing stages of drug development.

    Works on business critical technical/scientific project activities to execute strategies and technical solutions that meet client needs and expectations through broad expertise. Participates in technical discussions with clients with an expert level of technical proficiency. Engages in creation of processes and equipment design for clinical, scale up, and/or registration batches, including technology transfer of projects to and from clients.

    Evaluates and contributes to the design of manufacturing processes and supports problem solving as necessary with leadership and independent judgement. Typically works in a specific scientific area, such as analytical development, cell culture, purification, process validation, formulations, and/or manufacturing technical support. Makes decisions that require developing new options to solve complex problems.

Essential Functions:

Interacts with top company leaders to develop scientific strategy. Oversees execution of strategy.

Leads strategic initiatives and solutions and oversees implementation. Works closely with site management to optimize requirements of both client and site for portfolio of projects. Oversees and approves proposal development.

Leads meetings/teleconferences with clients. Leads development of methods and processes that meet or exceed the expectations from clients and provide innovation as necessary. Leads a team over multiple projects; manages team's project timelines and deliverables; reviews group's financials.

Guides and advises during implementation of new methodologies and processes. Directs resolution of problems related to the conduct of chemical experiments. Liaises with internal scientific, analytical, and laboratory functional areas to meet project and team objectives.

Performs all duties in strict compliance with Standard Operating Procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Laboratory Practices and Safety guidelines. Maintains the necessary compliance status required by company and facility standards.

Scientist II provides method development, validation or routine analyses in an Analytical Development and Chemistry/Bioanalytical Laboratory environment by following standard or industry best practices. Performs analytical methods as assigned for testing on samples, stability, environmental and production intermediates. Supports internal development and/or manufacturing operations. Makes detailed observations and reviews, documents, and communicates test results. Essential Functions: 1. Conducts routine chemical and physical testing of pharmaceutical finished products, intermediates and stability samples by internally or externally developed and compendial test methods. 2. Develops and executes validated test methods for pharmaceutical intermediate or finished products for strength, impurities, identity, and dissolution by HPLC, GC, dissolution, spectroscopy, and traditional quantitative analysis, utilizing HPLC, GC, LC/MS, dissolution, spectroscopy, and/or traditional wet chemical testing. 3. Recognizes and reports out-of-specification or unexpected results and non-routine analytical and product problems. 4. Performs daily instrument calibrations / verifications as required. 5. Clearly and accurately communicates the results of work by creating documentation of the testing/analysis/development and obtained results. Records and reports results of analysis in accordance with prescribed lab procedures and systems. 6. Assists in preparing regulatory documents and other communications with outside agencies, clients, and/or colleagues from other corporate sites. 7. Contributes to writing or authoring of SOPs if needed. 8. Cleans and organizes work area, instrumentation, and testing materials. Cleans HPLC and other systems/instruments after use. 9. Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in physical science, preferably in Chemistry or Biology with 3 – 5 years previous related experience, Master's degree with 2 – 3 years previous related experience or PhD with no previous experience. Experience performing method development and validation, chemical tests with chromatographic, spectroscopic, or other analytical techniques preferred. Competencies: Good knowledge and understanding of basic and advanced instrumental technologies. Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative chemical or microbiological analysis. Awareness of quality and regulatory requirements in the pharmaceutical industry. Good problem solving skills and logical approach to solving scientific problems. Demonstrable interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written). Ability to read and interpret technical procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as determination of test reliability, analysis of variance, and correlation techniques.
