Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for a Solutions Architect in Denver, CO who is passionate about helping enterprise customers build infrastructures and applications at scale. Our solutions architects are experienced technologists with technical breadth and depth coupled with strong interpersonal skills. As a solutions architect, you will work directly with some of our largest customers to enable innovation through continuous deployment across technology stacks and demonstrate best practices around advanced cloud solutions.

You will partner with Sales, Professional Services, and several other AWS teams to craft highly scalable, flexible and resilient cloud architectures that address customer business problems and accelerate the adoption of our services. Our solutions architects build architectures and provide prescriptive guidance across networking, storage, operating systems, virtualization, RDBMS & NoSQL databases, Hadoop, and mid-tier technologies (application integration, security, in-memory caches).

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of large scale computing solutions and experience leading deep architecture discussions. They must be self-motivated with a demonstrated ability to think strategically about business, products, and technical challenges and have a passion for educating, training, and designing cloud solutions for enterprise customers.


  • As a key member of the SA team, ensure success in designing, building and migrating applications, software, and services on the AWS platform

  • Educate enterprise customers on the value proposition of AWS

  • Participate in deep architectural discussions and design exercises to create world-class solutions built on AWS while ensuring solutions are designed for successful deployment in the cloud

  • Author or otherwise contribute to AWS customer-facing publications such as whitepapers and proof of concepts

  • In partnership with the sales team, formulate and execute a sales strategy to exceed revenue objectives through the adoption of AWS

  • Build deep relationships with senior technical individuals within customers to enable them to be cloud advocates

  • Capture and share best-practice knowledge amongst the AWS solutions architect community

Applications delivers high quality application development and support to its customers while looking for opportunities to use newer technologies to deliver those services more efficiently, effectively, and elegantly. The Solutions Architect (Applications) plays an important role in the design and analysis of on-going and future software projects. They will document standards for application design across all web-based, mobile, multi-tiered, and cloud native architectures. They will evaluate application technologies and make recommendations to solution engineers and development staff to ensure alignment with approved enterprise architecture strategies and technology roadmaps. The incumbent will work collaboratively with other OIT Architect positions including but not limited to: Chief Enterprise Architect, Cloud Architect, Data Architect, Infrastructure Architect, Security Architect, Business Architect, and the Architectural Review Board. Primary Job Duties: Application Architecture * Bring best in class technologies, innovation, and creativity in developing technical solutions to solve complex multi-dimensional problems. * Perform a wide range of highly technical and advisory duties associated with the design, implementation and support of OIT Applications solutions. * Provide technology leadership by architecting, prototyping, researching, recommending, documenting, and assisting in implementing and evaluating technical solutions for business issues whether purchased or developed. * Interpret business, technical, regulatory, and architectural requirements in researching and recommending solutions. * Review the accuracy of the release notes and technical documentation through collaboration with the applications development areas. * Collaborate, coordinate, and monitor OIT technologies for capacity planning, data modeling, integration planning and availability measurement. * Work with the CISO staff to implement appropriate application security controls and development practices across all applications development areas. * Work with CTO staff to establish standards and disciplined techniques for technical activities like creating new code, restructuring existing code, and maintaining version control and security. * Develop estimates of the teamwork effort needed to deliver application solutions based on the project specifications provided; report progress to management and project managers as requested. * Interface with vendors and vendor technology/solutions, as well as appropriate involvement of OIT architecture, throughout the entire project lifecycle. * Have ongoing interaction with key stakeholders to advise and ensure that timely, innovative, and appropriate infrastructure and services support agency strategies, projects and outcomes to align with OIT roadmaps, desired future states and overall architectural fit. * Assist where/when necessary in the assignment of team members to projects and initiatives based on skill set and experience required. * Participate in architecture, design, and code reviews (re: Architectural Review Board, etc.). * Oversee the Design Process for Application Software from product design to testing and modifications. Be involved in the software development lifecycle process. This involves guiding the creation of models and prototypes, evaluating potential risks and defects, analyzing specifications and recommending customizing applications for specific customers. * Provide Technical Support, Guidance, and Training solutions in areas of disaster recovery, data integrity and security. Evaluate and recommend software technologies in these areas, evaluate alternatives and analyze problems with data infrastructures. * Create Technical Documents/Standards relating to application architecture, design steps, integration processes and testing procedures relating to each product developed, especially within a DevSecOps environment. This documentation would also cover the installation and maintenance of application software as well as guidelines and standards that should be adhered to for each product. * Applying design and testing methods. Understand design and production procedures and standards to create prototypes and finished products. * Work closely with systems analysts, software developers, data managers and other team members to ensure successful production of application software. * Create custom options that offer viable solutions for various systems and architectures to different types of businesses. * Integrate applications with existing systems to ensure a seamless integration of new and existing systems to eliminate potential problems while simultaneously maintaining data structure and integrity. * Assist with the evaluation of existing applications for modernization, decommissioning, or sustainability. * Deliver, guide and mentor development staff on working within a DevSecOps toolset and development framework. Assist in the governance and compliance of this practice. Build Institutional Knowledge and Project Work * Promote the understanding of OIT Application Architecture and industry standard patterns and practices. * Mentor and coach other OIT architecture staff to ensure consistent delivery of quality industry-standard solutions. * Capture and share best-practice knowledge with the solution architect community. * Ensure that intellectual assets created during the delivery process are captured, documented and evolved in the knowledge base in a manner that is reusable and relevant, including delivery and process models, sample project plans, sample deliverables, estimating and cost models, resource allocations. * Community outreach with the technology architects in the appropriate Colorado communities and internally. * Capture and share best practice knowledge with the solution architect community. Support IT Innovation in the Enterprise and Vendor Engagements * Plan initiatives with OIT's functional area teams based on budget, approaches and infrastructure to the OIT application architecture governing principles and identify when it is necessary to modify underlying business processes or the OIT application architecture standards to accommodate needs. * Understand OIT funding model and align technology initiatives to ensure the highest return on investment (ROI) based on available budget, while understanding and ensuring the long term requirements for sustainable service. * Maintain currency in technologies and trends through research. * Maintain awareness of current and future work efforts across the enterprise and identify opportunities for implementing innovative solutions. * Research and recommend solutions that meet the requirements of the customers and align with annual agency work plans, OIT's enterprise strategy, and the OIT Playbook. * Collaborate with Services Engagement Business Analysts and Solution Engineers to drive solution design options to meet customer requests. * Track initiatives, evaluate the effectiveness of the planned solutions and recommend alternative solutions when needed. * Provide thought leadership in emerging trends as they relate to business process development and execution. * Maintain and establish technical contacts with IT industry leaders to pioneer innovative technologies, ideas and structures within OIT. * Translate complicated technical plans into clear, business value added proposals, which are compelling and effectively communicated using a variety of methods and forums. * Anticipate the training needs of end users and support staff who will maintain the solution in production. * Assist the Enterprise Architects in the management of strategic alliances to position OIT as the premier service provider for agencies within the State of Colorado. * Pursue the development and testing of innovative solutions and organize work efforts and resources needed to prototype or pilot them. * Demonstrate the benefits (increased operational efficiencies, decreased costs, etc.) of a solution to an agency unit. * Coordinate with OIT internal operations stakeholders to consider the implications (to infrastructure, security, etc.) of introducing solutions. * Understand advanced data migration techniques. * Understand the enterprise perspective of OIT operations across the supported agencies. * Provide technical support for grants and seek out grant opportunities that support projects and initiatives. * Initiate and lead strategic technology decisions across the enterprise, including the alignment of technology to deliver services; changing process as needed to enable effective delivery. * Identify opportunities for technology alignment and work with other senior and executive leaders to gain consensus and lead transformation. Additional Duties as Assigned * Take on additional duties as they arise to fulfill the OIT mission and goals. Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights Work Experience * 8 years of hands-on programming experience in applications development, with at least 4 of those as a senior developer or team lead for an applications development group or other IT experience directly relevant to the role. * Minimum 4 years proven experience working with configuration of interconnected systems like databases, app servers, web servers and file servers. Education/Training * Undergraduate degree Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in information technology, network security, computer science, or related fields. (Relevant work experience may be substituted for education at the hiring manager's discretion.) Preferred Skills and Knowledge * Database reporting services, distributed database, NoSQL, and traditional relational database models * Application SOA, web services, and Restful API concepts * Data privacy, data compliance and security best practices * Identity management and security best practices * Experience with IT Strategy Planning in developing 3-5 year IT strategic roadmaps (IT Strategic Planning) * Experience with up-do-date cloud, mobile, deep learning AI, and other emerging technologies * Experience with large, enterprise physical and virtual infrastructure environments * Experience with platform as a service (PAAS) products that use containers (Docker / Kubernetes) * Experience with developing architectural metrics and reports * Basic understanding of at least one Enterprise Architecture methodology (e.g. TOGAF) * In-depth knowledge and understanding of blockchain services, blockchain technologies, regulatory requirements, distributed applications and privacy and security policies * Capable of providing guidance to programs and projects on the use of technologies with hands-on approaches, if needed.
