We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Sr. Scientist in our Nuclear Technologies and Materials division supporting the Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) and Energy Multiplier Module (EM) projects within our Energy group. Under general directions with limited review, this position will focus on advancing the state-of-the-art in ceramics and ceramic composite fabrication and characterization, and applying these materials to nuclear, aerospace, and other demanding applications.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works with existing EM science staff to develop and improve methods for ceramic fabrication, characterization, and manufacturing.
Performs research and development of ceramic composites (fabricated using methods such as chemical vapor infiltration), and works improve uniformity and process repeatability.
Works to scale-up fabrication processes while achieving performance requirements and maintaining yields.
Provides documentation and makes technical presentations as required, and may assist in responding to proposals for new or the expansion of existing business opportunities.
Designs, develops, modifies, installs, and documents laboratory, experimental or commercial equipment with ceramic fabrication routes.
May represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single component projects.
Operates equipment and/or performs tests requiring knowledge of processes pertinent to the project.
Collects, records, reduces, and summarizes data.
May provide direction to a team of moderately experienced professional staff.
Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Typically requires a Bachelors degree, Masters degree or PhD in a scientific or related technical field and progressively complex scientific experience as follows; six or more years experience with a Bachelors degree, four or more years experience with a Masters degree, and two or more with a PhD. Equivalent scientific experience may be substituted in lieu of education.
A degree in Material Science or Nuclear Engineering is highly desirable.
Experience in development and/or production of ceramics and ceramic composites is desirable.
Experience with silicon carbide is desirable.
Experience developing materials for nuclear or aerospace applications is desirable.
Experience with high temperature material processing and fabrication methods is desirable.
Experience with Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processes is desirable.
Experience with any modeling of chemical and physical processes relating to ceramics processing and performance is desirable.
Familiar with material characterization methods applicable to ceramics, ceramic composites, and coatings.
Experience with project management, and with providing direction to a team of technicians or engineers is desirable.
Must demonstrate; (1) a thorough understanding of scientific concepts, principles, codes, and theory; (2) experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, (3) an expanding knowledge of those principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
Must possess the ability to; (1) develop and communicate new concepts; (2) apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; (3) organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, (4) determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Able to perform complex tasks in one or more scientific areas; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and, lead a team of moderately experienced professional employees on single component projects. Able to work extended hours and travel as required.
Original works published in professional scientific journals or formal technical equivalents are highly desirable. Experience with writing proposals is highly desirable.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance is desirable.
