A123 Systems, LLC is in search of a Research Engineer or Senior Research Engineer for our Waltham, MA location.
The Research Engineer's primary responsibility is to support the development, validation and scale-up of novel solid-state battery (SSB) technologies for safe, high energy density storage systems. Responsibilities include electrode coating development, characterization and failure analysis, including lab and pre-pilot scale mixing, coating for small format cell builds to evaluate our advanced technologies. Additional responsibilities include data collection, test procedure modification, data analysis and presentation, updating SOPs, and maintaining shared laboratory space.
This position will report to the Cathode Manager.
Primary Responsibilities:
Support in planning and execution of electrode coating development and optimization for scale up.
Design and validation of new solid state battery technologies and processes.
Evaluating performance at device level and via ex situ characterization methods.
Support transfer of technologies from bench and pre-pilot level through to pilot and production scale.
Interact with existing and potential collaborators inside and outside of A123.
Performing other functions as required to support the R & D operation and other A123 business units.
Skill Requirements:
A preference for hands-on laboratory work and problem solving.
Strong work ethic, detail oriented, highly accountable, and able to take ownership of laboratory functions.
Good communication skills with the ability to interact with technicians, laboratory managers, and scientists.
Take initiative and is able to work with a creative mindset with little or no supervision.
Can effectively work with others in a fast paced, collaborative environment.

Education/Experience:
M.S. in chemical engineering, chemistry, mechanical engineering, materials science, or related field; 1+ years of experience in field of Li-ion battery technology development desired. This position may also be filled at the senior level for candidates with more than 6 years of relevant experience.
Alternatively, B.S. in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or related field and minimum of 3 years of industrial laboratory experience.
Development or manufacturing of coatings. Experience with electrochemical devices. Knowledge of Li-ion battery technology is highly desirable.
Hands on work in a wet chemical lab, and with analytical instruments. Moisture sensitive chemistry experience (glove box, dry room) is a plus.
