Under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager, has 24-hour clinical supervisory responsibility of mental health nursing services for Ventura County Mental Health Inpatient Services andcoordinates nursing services with interdisciplinary functions during assigned shifts.
CERTIFICATION PAY: Incumbents in this classification are eligible for certification pay at a rate of $0.813 per hour based on his or her scheduled work week hours and not to exceed the scheduled work week hours for each qualified certification possessed up to a maximum of five (5) certifications.
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive. This incentive may be 5% for incumbents in eligible positions based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification.
BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending on the applicable memorandum of agreement and the needs of the department. In order to qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination with a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher.
AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Health Care Agency - VCMC Inpatient Psychiatric Unit
Sr RN-MH-AC is represented by the California Nurses' Association (CNA) and is eligible for overtime compensation.
NOTE: Salary placement will be determined according to the current CNA memorandum of agreement.
The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-Term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies. There is currently one (1) Regular vacancy. The shift for the current vacancy will be determined based on the need of the unit.

Examples Of Duties
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Manages admissions and discharges of patients into the Inpatient Unit and/or Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU);
Coordinates and provides clinical/functional supervision to nursing services staff with interdisciplinary functions and motivates staff;
Ensures that hospital administration policies, philosophies, and nursing services procedures are interpreted, taught, and appropriately carried out by nursing personnel on all shifts;
Recommends unit staffing patterns and assigns personnel to provide for patient care for a 24-hour, seven-day period basis;
Uses evaluation data in collaboration with other health disciplines to influence the revision of the patient care treatment plan, as well as maintaining standards of care;
Acts as a liaison between staff and administration;
Writes and revises procedures for patient care;
Provides consultation to Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) staff regarding mentally ill patients in the hospital.
Provides in-service programs for staff in the mental health facility as well as the Ventura County Medical Center;
Works with and across multiple and complex organizational lines for planning, implementing and measuring results with divisions such as Dietary, Housekeeping, Laboratory, VCMC Nursing Administration, and Day Treatment;
Arranges with educational facilities for clinical experiences for students;
May provide community service to groups related to mental health; and
Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE
Sr RN-MH-Acute Care requires four (4) years of full-time mental health Registered Nursing experience, one (1) year of which was in a supervisory capacity.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California.
Must have a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by first day of employment.
Depending upon area of assignment, additional specialty experience and/or certification(s) may be required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of: the theories, techniques and practices of professional nursing; mental health nursing theories and practices, including the varied theories, techniques, and practices related to working with mentally unstable persons, and the discriminative ability in the selective use of these techniques; theory of human growth and development; current mental health treatment approaches; crisis theory and techniques and suicide prevention; community, County, State and Federal resources and their interrelationships; California Mental Health laws and their application, and other mental health laws related to patient care; effective clinical/functional supervision techniques and practices; group dynamics; interdisciplinary functioning and team building; community organization strategies and ability to apply them; and the social and political factors influencing mental health care delivery.
Working ability to: apply current theories, philosophy, and principles of effective management; provide effective functional supervision and leadership; participate in comprehensive planning in consultation with a multidisciplinary team; make independent decisions on behalf of patients; maintain confidentiality of patient/client information; implement an effective training program for non-professional and professional co-workers and other community agencies or groups; plan and give mental health consultation to non-mental health personnel and other agencies; establish and maintain the confidence of and working relationships with professional staff, patients and families, and other related entities; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
