AdvanSix is a fully integrated manufacturer of nylon 6 resin, chemical intermediates and ammonium sulfate fertilizer. We are seeking an R&D Technician who will be responsible for supporting the troubleshooting and scale up of chemical products.

Role Description and Responsibilities

The R&D Technician position will primarily focus on new product development within the Process Technology group supporting all business functions of AdvanSix.

The successful candidate will work closely with scientists and technicians that provide new product development for the core businesses of AdvanSix. The R&D Technician is expected to safely perform their daily duties and become knowledgeable in the chemistries they are working with. The daily duties of the R&D Technician include: ordering and handling raw materials, preparing new materials for internal and customer testing, developing internal test methods, using various types of analytical equipment, conducting simple benchtop experiments, maintaining lab notebooks, performing routine testing, and analyzing and reporting results.

Minimum requirements:

  • A 2-year Associates degree in Science is preferred but not required.

  • 1-3 years of experience in a chemical industry

  • Basic problem solving skills required.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities using an organized, efficient process including the application of standard techniques, procedures

  • A "hands on" mentality

  • Experience in execution of safe work practices

  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn

  • Should be self motivated and self directed.

Preferred experience:

  • Familiarity with industrial R&D environment

  • Experience working with chemicals and analytical equipment

  • Experience of working in a collaborative environment

Should lead studies on the synthesis of new molecules from bench to pilot plant scale, including process optimization. As a key member of a multi-functional R&D team, the candidate will provide chemistry leadership in developing new solvents/molecules based on our current products and their potential application spaces * Be able to leverage modern analytical methods (IC, UV-vis, HPLC,GC, GC/MS) to understand our manufacturing processes and develop new products and applications for our products and their derivatives. * Experienced in a variety of organic synthesis methods and approaches. * Proven success in commercialization starting from the bench scale is a plus. * Support Product development efforts in collaboration with our Applications group, including synthetic pathways to yield commercialization * Utilize a strong chemistry background combined with statistical design/modeling tools to ensure effective experimentation and analysis. * Collaborate with Engineering team to take new processes/products from the laboratory to production, ensuring consistent manufacturing performance. * Collaborate with the commercial group to understand market needs for new products and target markets/applications, and conceive of and develop new molecules based on our existing product portfolio to meet those needs. * Maintain a safe lab BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: * Ph.D in organic/synthetic organic chemistry * Experience in traditional and contemporary organic synthesis techniques. * Familiarity with a wide range of techniques and reaction types such as low temperature reactions, inert atmosphere, metal-catalyzed cross coupling, hydrogenation, etc. * Capable of independently evaluating synthetic routes and proactive troubleshooting. * Ability to work safely with potentially hazardous chemicals. * Be highly skilled in practical and theoretical aspects of synthetic organic chemistry. * Have strong understanding of reaction mechanisms and reactivity. * Have strong expertise in multi-step synthetic chemistry over a broad range of reaction types, conditions and scale. Have strong experience in the synthesis, purification, and characterization of compounds. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: * Ph.D in organic chemistry with 5 or more years experience in an industrial environment * Experience with amide chemistry and reactions. * Experience with Polymer chemistry and monomer synthesis, particular as it related to polyester/polyamides * 3-5 years of developing and testing new chemical products and finding commercially viable synthetic pathways to make them * Demonstrated success in developing innovative technologies and experiments * Technical competence - organic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, polymer chemistry, statistical, and computer skills * Excellent English communication and presentation skills and Teamwork capabilities. * Bias for action and results oriented mindset * Ability to work both independently, and in team environments * Creative, innovative thinker * Frequently shows ability to generate new technology and ideas. * Has invented, developed and commercialized new products and improvements in a technology. * Demonstrated leadership of smaller projects or components of larger projects AdvanSix is an equal opportunity employer.
