Position Description:

Identify business unmet need on polymeric material cross coronary and structure heart business and perform technology scouting and evaluation on new material and process technology to solve problem and build platform technology for future product development. Leads research/development projects in multi-functional project teams (as assigned). Design and development of new and modified coronary & structural heart device for medical applications in a regulated environment. Activities will include technology scouting, build material strategy, methods/process development, prototype building/testing, design modeling, tooling design/fabrication, equipment design/fabrication, qualification, validation, and documentation.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Technical resource to all departments and represents R&D on project teams.

  • Communication across business units and key stakeholders to identify unmet material need.

  • Design and implementation of new coronary & structural heart device based on requirements specifications.

  • Technology scouting and identify opportunities for feasibility studies to prove concept.

  • Performs feasibility test and Specifies tests for product testing based on design specifications and applicable guidelines (industrial and government guidelines and/or standards).

  • Performs data analysis (statistical and practical) and develops appropriate action plans based upon such analysis.

  • Develops tooling and test equipment designs for product assembly and testing. Examples of pertinent duties include creating CAD drawings, equipment modeling, specifications development.

  • Prepares plans and schedules for own work and others as required.

  • Communicates progress and decisions to associates and functional manager.

  • Project leader for research projects (as assigned). Duties include project schedule maintenance, organize and facilitate team meetings, project documentation, and coordination of project team activities.

  • Participates in technical reviews.

  • Follows company policies and procedures.

  • Identifies opportunities productivity and quality improvements.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:


Education Required

BS in Material science, Polymer engineering or Biomedical Engineering, or BS in related field with appropriate engineering course work. Master in biomedical engineering preferred.

Years of Experience

Min. 5 years of medical device engineering work , preferred 3-5 years in prosthetic heart valve product development design and testing.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Specific knowledge of Domestic and International standards for cardiovascular diseases and devices.

  • Experience with delivery system material development and material selection

  • Curious about new technologies, interest in phase 0 projects and development of new concepts and problem solving.

Specialized Knowledge or Skills

(Needs to be objective, relevant, and non-comparative)

  • Knowledge of United States and International regulatory requirements (medical device, general), GMPs and industry standards/guidelines.

  • Deep understanding of polymeric material property, characterization and manufacturing process(extrusion, injection, additives, etc. ).

  • Understanding of implant-tissue interaction and evaluation

  • Computer Skills : CAD; Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint; LabVIEW; Matlab

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Project management and planning

  • Statistical Methods

Interpret complaints with associated analysis results, initiate and monitor trends of failure and complaint patterns as they emerge based upon statistical analysis. Establish and maintain trending triggers and standards for product performance. Develop and execute necessary plans for integrated reliability and/or failure analysis test activities to ensure product reliability and overall product goals are met. Provide guidance/support in areas of process engineering, product quality assurance and quality engineering to drive continuous process and product improvements based on sound engineering principles and field product performance. Coronary and Structural Heart provides interventional devices to treat coronary arteries that are blocked by atherosclerotic plaque and devices and therapies to treat structural defects of the heart. ______________________________________________________________________ POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: * At the appropriate point during post commercialization, work to ensure a smooth transition of product Quality responsibilities from Design Assurance Engineering (DAE) to the Post Market Product Assurance (PMPA) group (reliability/performance metrics reporting, etc.). * Prioritize timely completion of complaint investigations, Corrective Action and Preventive Action (CAPA) decisions, and Device History Record (DHR) reviews, ensuring that corrective action decisions and investigations are based on sound engineering analysis and review. * Initiates discussions with management, Field Assurance, and Quality Assurance (QA) via the product quality meetings or other appropriate forum, when new failure mode trends are identified, providing field performance data as it becomes available. * Develop and maintain a robust process for identifying and monitoring root cause failure modes, frequency, and severity. Provide statistical data to Field Assurance, QA, and management on product performance, effectively describing clinical observations and the relationship with device performance. * Represent QA in product Risk Analysis updates for assigned products. Maintain product risk management file for commercial product, including design and process failure mode effects analysis (dFMEA, pFMEA), post market surveillance report (PMSR), risk management plan and report (RMP, RMR). * Maintain, monitor and report trend analysis information on assigned products. * Provide direction for failure analysis technicians to ensure that field returns are evaluated appropriately to deliver clear results and potential root causes for identified failures. * Function as a primary contact point between Field Assurance and QA as it relates to assigned products. Prepare response for regulatory inquiries (FDA, OUS regulators) as assigned. * Conduct all engineering activities in compliance with FDA's Quality System Regulation, Medical Device Directive (MDD), ISO 13485, Canadian CMDR, and other quality and regulatory requirements and standards. * Support returned product analysis and failure investigation activities for manufactured products (explant lab). * Demonstrate high level engineering thought processes that are based on both driving business objectives and product quality improvements. * Deliver constructive feedback and provide quality leadership in a cross-functional environment. Must Have: Minimum Requirements Bachelor's in Engineering, Science or technical discipline plus 4+ years of experience in quality or engineering OR Master's in Engineering, Science or technical discipline plus 2+ years of experience in quality or engineering.
