A Sr. Professional Engineer

  • Soil Lab position is available with the City of Fort Worth Transportation and Public Works Department Capital Delivery Division. The Infrastructure Design, and Construction Section, is seeking a Senior Professional Engineer to serve as a Soil Lab Manager. The selected individual will be responsible for managing the daily operations of the geotechnical and materials testing lab by managing projects, personnel, contract administration and equipment. The lab is responsible for pre and post testing of materials for all road, street, sewer, and storm drain construction projects in the City of Fort Worth.

The ideal candidate must be able to work within tight time constraints, have strong interpersonal and leadership skills, the ability to work independently under the direction of a Construction Manager, and possess good oral and written communication skills.

This Position qualifies for the following incentive which is separate from the base pay:

Sign-On Incentive of $5,400 *50% paid after the completion of first pay period, 50% paid after the completion of 6 months of employment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering or a related field.

  • Three years of professional civil engineering experience as a registered Professional Engineer, of which, two years must be in the geotechnical engineering and materials testing.

  • Possession of a Professional Engineer license in the State of Texas. If licensed in another state, continued employment will be contingent upon obtaining registration as a Professional Engineer within the State of Texas within six months of employment.

  • Valid Texas Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of geotechnical software for soil testing such as Geosystem or similar software.

  • Experience in preparing soil samples, performing density and index testing, operating various testing equipment and administering contracts for consultant services.

  • Proficiency with eBuilder, Adobe Pro, MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and geographic information systems (GIS) and Supervisory experience.

The Sr. Professional Engineer

  • Soil Lab job responsibilities include:
  • Performing geotechnical tests, preparing laboratory reports, maintaining laboratory equipment, and managing sample retention and disposal.

  • Serving as the subject matter expert and providing geotechnical-related recommendations to engineers, inspectors, and contractors for design and construction.

  • Monitoring the quality control of internal and external (contract) labs.

  • Preparing, advertising, selecting and managing Annual Geotechnical Contracts with external Geotechnical firms.

  • Supervising, training, and managing staff and ensuring efficient use of resources.

  • Preparing budgets and overseeing purchases and expenditures for the lab.

  • Preparing soil samples, performing density and index testing, operating various testing equipment and administering contracts for consultant services. Responsible for overseeing and directing the following tests specifically: Concrete Compression Test, Unit Weight Analysis, Sieve Analysis, HMAC Densities, Lime Series Test, Gradations, Atterburg Limits, Moisture Density Proctors, and Pavement Thickness Cores.

Physical Demand

Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly having to move objects.
