JOB TITLE: Underwriter - Sr.


JOB PURPOSE: To underwrite new business and renewals according to authority level and established guidelines, participate in special projects, and provide mentoring for less experienced staff.


  • Review large and highly complex policies to verify acceptability based upon company underwriting guidelines and granted underwriting authority.

  • Determine whether to accept, modify, or decline risks.

  • Oversee and approve endorsements as indicated.

  • Resolve premium audit disputes within assigned territory.

  • Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges.

  • Review state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within the state.

  • Consult with general agents/brokers to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain underwriting guidelines.

  • Create, analyze, and interpret data from various reports.

  • Manage assigned underwriting territory, including management of agents and travel to agent offices.

  • Mentor less experienced team members.

  • Conduct educational sessions within the department.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree or seven year to ten years related insurance experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Eight to ten years underwriting experience with authority, preferably in excess and surplus lines.

  • Demonstrates an understanding and ability to effectively engage in the negotiation process.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Previous insurance educational work, IIA and CPCU designation strongly preferred.

  • Detail oriented with initiative and the ability to work independently in a fast paced environment.

  • Excellent analytical skills.

  • Ability to travel.

  • Advanced knowledge of computer programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Job Summary James River Insurance is seeking candidates for its Excess Casualty division and will consider hiring at the Underwriter, Senior Underwriter, and Underwriting Specialist levels. The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing and analyzing underwriting data in order to determine if risks meet corporate underwriting standards calculate appropriate premium and determine proper terms for acceptable risks and respond to brokers when risks do not meet underwriting guidelines. Underwriters are also responsible for developing and maintaining profitable business relationships with brokers. Duties and Responsibilities * Continuously exhibit and uphold Core Values of Integrity, Accountability, Communication and Teamwork, Innovation and Customer Service * Analyze new business opportunities and develop renewal strategies * Attain quote, premium and division goals as assigned * Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers * Use critical thinking and problem solving skills to negotiate with brokers on placements * Travel to meet with brokers within assigned territory at least three times per year * Other duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills and Abilities * Ability to effectively and properly select, evaluate, model, determine coverage, rate, document, quote and bind accounts * Ability to effectively assess risk * Excellent verbal and written communication skills * Ability to work independently or in a team environment to complete assignments within the parameters of instructions given, prescribed processes and standard accepted underwriting practices * Solid knowledge of underwriting philosophy and techniques * Proven problem solving and decision making skills * Strong negotiation skills * Ability to multi-task * High level of initiative and motivation * Strong work ethic with a drive to succeed * Solid customer service and relationship building skills * Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Internet researching Experience and Education * Qualifications may warrant placement in a different job level Underwriter * Bachelors Degree or equivalent work experience * Minimum of 2 years of related underwriting experience preferably in Excess and Surplus lines * Preferably pursuing courses toward professional designations or continuing education.
