Job Description

The Senior Product Engineer for Brooks Life Sciences (BLS) will lead product engineering and continuous improvement efforts for BioStore III Cryo -190C System and its variants, the robotics based automated sample storage and retrieval systems for gene and cell therapy, blood processing & analysis, drug discovery, and medical research markets. Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, the Senior Product Engineer will be the key, focal person in the engineering group for all technical issues in manufacturing and the field, providing project management and technical leadership for enhancements and extensions of current products. As the primary technical interface to OEM customers, the Sr Product Engineer must be highly organized with strength in mechanical, electrical or systems engineering, and will use this strength to help drive issue resolution, collaborating across the engineering team.

Key Focus Areas

  • Track, troubleshoot, identify the root cause, resolve, and generate corrective actions for issues that have been escalated to engineering and will lead and implement fixes, modifications, and design enhancements.

  • Perform routine updates and corrections to engineering documentations (drawings, BOM, Specs, FMEAs, etc.), ensuring meticulous, detailed, and thorough documentations

  • Support the design and testing of new products

  • Support the transfer of new products from engineering to manufacturing.

  • Occasional travel (5-10%) to customers' location for onsite support

Qualifications:

  • BS in ME, robotics/automation or a related field.

  • Project management and strong organizational skills.

  • 5+ years' experience with capital/process equipment products with mechanisms and robotics automation preferred.

  • Experience in designing mechanisms and knowledge of machining and fabrication processes for metals and the commonly used plastics is a plus.

  • Familiarity with SolidWorks or similar CAD program.

  • Demonstrated capability to perform basic engineering analysis and familiarity with commonly used analysis tools (e.g. FEM).

  • Ability to read and understand schematics and drawings and perform basic troubleshooting.

  • Experience with refrigerated systems a plus.

  • Must have a strong work ethic and good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Self-starter must be able to work independently with minimum supervision or direction.

Duties/Responsibilities MPR is actively seeking a Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer for a full time position for our Product Development group. This group is responsible for development of medical and diagnostic devices, as well as consumer products. Work is accomplished by a multi-disciplinary integrated project team, beginning with the product conceptualization, through detailed design, all the way through the process of transferring the design to manufacturing. The job location is at MPR's offices in Alexandria, VA. Responsibilities include * Planning and leading the mechanical design efforts of multi-discipline system designs, including coaching and mentoring other engineers through execution of the work. * Developing design solutions for a range of mechanical design challenges across various projects including, for example: * Enclosures (rib features, bosses, snap features, parting lines, etc.). * Mechanical drives, actuators, and mechanisms (springs, belts, pulleys, bearings, gear systems, etc.). * Electromechanical and fluidic systems (motors, encoders, actuators, pumps, etc.). * Creating design files such as 3D CAD models and 2D fabrication drawings. * Procuring, creating system components, as well as assembling prototypes and test systems. * Verifying designs through analysis and testing, and communicating results internally and externally. Qualifications Education * BS or MS/ME in Mechanical Engineering required. Technical Skills and Experience * 8-15 years work experience in the field of mechanical design, preferably with development of medical technologies or consumer products. * Experience using solid modeling, analysis, and functional prototyping to develop concepts into detailed designs. * Significant experience using Solidworks in the design of parts and complex assemblies. * Ability to produce 2D part and assembly drawings. * Experience with weldment, sheet metal, surfacing, and routing packages is a plus. * Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). * Experience developing measurement and test approaches for assessing and confirming design attributes. Experience with mechanical part measurement tools and techniques. * Design for manufacturing experience (injection molding, thermoforming, machining, sheet metal, stamping, etc.) to reduce both part complexity and cost. * Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software such as ANSYS. * Experience with rapid prototyping techniques and technologies (e.g. 3D printing, machining, SLA, SLS). * Experience transferring designs into manufacturing including troubleshooting manufacturer end customer issues. * Able to work closely with electrical engineers and industrial designers to incorporate design constraints from these functional areas into the mechanical design. Experience successfully working in a collaborative integrated design team is essential. * Strong analytical skills with fundamental understanding of the underlying first principles of engineering. Additional desired experience includes: * Experience working in an ISO 13485 or ISO 9001 quality program. * Experience with Solidworks Enterprise PDM. * Experience with complete product lifecycle (shipping, assembly, maintenance, disposal, etc.). * Experience using machining equipment (mill and lathe). Skills - Personal * Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with clients and senior management. * Ability to multi-task across teams of engineers and managers on various projects. * Ability to oversee more junior engineers work efforts and mentor them. * Motivated to tackle new problems and take on new responsibilities. * Good time management and organization skills.
