Who we are: Spectrum Networks is a growing organization, with 16 Local News Channels nationwide and 3 Regional Sports Networks in the Los Angeles area.

The Environment: Spectrum News is a 24-hour breaking news network which requires employees who are flexible and available to work various shift, including early morning, late evenings, weekends and holidays. The network is focused on the morning news, which means early mornings, but it also means primarily being off about noon

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for producing creative and original content for assigned shows and newscast. Contributes to special features and stories. Participate in coordinating coverage of major stories, breaking news and specials.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Produces creative and original content for assigned newscasts and news inserts making decisions on story lineup, video/audio elements, graphics and timing to construct show taking guidance from newsroom managers.

  • Writes creative and original news stories for an assigned newscasts; ensuring content is factually correct and written in a clear and concise conversational style before submitting to Executive Producer for final newscast clearance.

  • Verifies stories are written to the pictures being edited and/or vice versa.

  • Produces live or recorded newscasts.

  • In the absence of an Executive Producer, Initiates on-air protocol when breaking news decision is made.

  • Works with associate producers and Producers to create the newscast product.

  • Provides specifics on newscast content for Producers and Associate Producers.

  • Produces special programming as needed.

  • Field-produces as needed.

  • Perform supervisory role as needed for specific shifts.

  • Assists in training new hires as needed.

  • Follows through on all assignments meeting required deadlines according to the Executive Producer's instructions.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Skills/Abilities and Knowledge

  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.

  • Strong broadcast news writing ability, including tease writing.

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Solid news judgment and passion for news.

  • Knowledge of current events and industry trends

  • Familiarity with the local market.

  • Knowledge of social media platforms.

  • Must be able to work rapidly and accurately.

  • Leads and assigns the work of others.

  • Must have ability to organize and manage multiple priorities and work under time pressure deadline.

  • Working knowledge of general office computer software, newsroom software and basic non-linear editing systems.

  • Ability to anticipate situations and meet strict deadlines.

  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment and interact with all personnel within the organization.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; ability to clearly communicate solutions; and able to relate well with diverse populations and age groups.

  • Must be able and willing to work various shifts, longer shifts, weekends and holidays, and be flexible with schedule changes due to "breaking news", and/or severe weather emergencies.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, communications or related field or comparable television work experience preferred.

Related Work Experience
5 years Television news producing experience
3 Years Line producing experience

Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment

  • Works primarily inside a climate controlled environment throughout the year but might be assigned field duties on occasion.

  • Works in an open newsroom setting with a semi-noisy environment.

  • May be required to lift up to 5 pounds.

  • Participate in an established on-call rotation

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at varying distances

SUMMARY The purpose of this position is to execute production of News programming utilizing various types of production equipment during live and recorded segments. Management reserves the right to add, change or revise this job description at any time. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES * Direct and/or technical direct live and taped segments with direction from producer. * Operate and maintain working knowledge of production equipment such as video switcher, character generator, remote controlled cameras, audio board, still store, computers, and various automation systems. * Prioritize workload based on communication from producer or executive producer. * Review final on-air product to assure high quality, notify producers of any potential editorial problems. * Develop and document control room procedures. * Communicate issues in a daily written report. * Troubleshoot technical problems. * Lead production team assigned for live or digitized newscast production. * Perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
