The qualified candidate will support several research projects and initiatives including process modeling and evaluation and lab/pilot scale research efforts. The specific programs supported by this position involve biomass gasification, renewable fuels synthesis, carbon capture & utilization, combustion, gas separations, hydrogen generation & utilization, natural gas processing & reforming, supercritical CO2 power cycles and other low carbon energy related programs. Work Location
The position will be based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. We offer a hybrid/core work week, where employees are remote Mondays and Fridays, and required to be on-site Tuesday through Thursday.
Primary Responsibilities
Develop process simulations using software such as Aspen for design and alternate cases.
Develop and modify block flow diagrams (BFDs), process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping & instrument diagrams (P&IDs), and material and energy balances.
Specify and size process equipment and create process datasheets.
Review and verify vendor deliverables and calculations.
Estimate equipment costs using Aspen process economizer, GTI Energy internal databases, or by getting vendor quotes.
Perform a techno-economic analysis (TEA), lifecycle analysis (LCA), and write formal/technical reports to communicate findings.
Perform technical bid evaluation and recommend optimal and cost-effective design to meet client needs.
Work with a group or independently and direct work to coworkers and technicians, as necessary.
Periodically assist program managers with input to proposals and contribute to brainstorming sessions.
Assess the feasibility and soundness of experimental approaches, techniques, or equipment design.
Attends safety training, safety meetings and applies safety standards.
Participate in hazard analysis on novel technologies.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
Experience with Front End Load (FEL) Engineering process deliverables on chemical processes or energy systems.
Experience with techno-economic analysis and process simulation using AspenTech programs such as Aspen Plus/HYSYS, and other process simulators is beneficial.
Experience with Aspen Custom Modeler and/or Aspen Dynamics is highly desirable.
Experience with Microsoft Visio, Bluebeam, AutoCAD or similar software for drafting and editing block flow diagrams, process flow diagrams and P&IDs is required
Experience with AutoCAD or similar software for drafting and editing P&IDs is required.
Working knowledge of Navisworks or similar software is beneficial for the review of 3D models.
Ability to effectively communicate (written/verbal) with internal and external personnel.
Motivated to learn new techniques and work with new low carbon intensity technologies.
Adaptive and flexible to succeed in a changing environment.
Education and Experience
B.S. in Chemical Engineering with 7+ years of relevant, professional-level experience or an advanced degree with 5+ years of relevant, professional-level experience
Work experience within an Engineering Consultancy or Engineering Procurement and Construction company is preferred
