Meet the team:

As a key member of the material science center within Dexcom's research and development organization, the Material Engineer will work closely with other engineers, scientists, and technicians to support the development of next generation CGM sensor membrane material technologies. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic polymer engineer with a clear understanding of the technical and regulatory challenges of developing and validating materials used in medical devices. The individual will be responsible for assisting in the development, scaling, qualification, and operation of pilot-scale material processing unit operations and related analytical testing. The individual will also collaborate cross-functionally with operations, supply chain, quality assurance, vendors, and other stakeholders outside of the R&D organization.

Where you come in:

  • Operate polymer synthesis, processing, and analytical testing equipment in support of technical feasibility, development, scaling, and technical transfer initiatives.

  • Troubleshoot, repair, and clean chemical processing equipment.

  • Assist in the design and IQ/OQ/PQ of new equipment and facilities.

  • Assist in determining equipment capabilities, process limits, and nominal control limits to assure stable and capable performance within specification limits.

  • Design and develop thoughtful DOE and testing protocols conducive to generation of rapid insights on processing-structure relationships and design optimization.

  • Monitor and control process parameters (SPC) to ensure specifications are met.

  • Develop and validate testing methodologies for process control and finished good QC release testing to ensure product specifications are met.

  • Work collaboratively and autonomously with raw material suppliers, equipment vendors, and other external partners to ensure deliverables are met.

  • Identify and optimize critical formulation and process parameters leading to robust manufacturing processes improving quality, yield, and efficiency.

  • Plan and schedule all feasibility work to ensure development timelines are met.

  • Proactively specify, procure, track, and stage all supplies and raw materials within inventory and quality management system.

  • Prepare documentation including laboratory notebooks, lot history records, manufacturing process instructions, SOPs, inventory and productivity reports, calibration schedules, and preventative maintenance schedules.

  • Prepare and communicate formal reports and presentations related to process work.

  • Train and perform all work in accordance with Dexcom's quality management system.

  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment within a 5S framework.

What makes you successful:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with polymer synthesis and processing unit operations - preferably for medical device applications.

  • Expertise in polymer science or polymer engineering.

  • Experience with polyurethane based coatings and water based dispersions ideal.

  • High level of hands-on mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot/repair equipment.

  • Must be able to able to create/maintain all necessary raw material, consumable, equipment, and process documentation within a regulated quality management system.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and adept with statistical analysis methods and tools.

  • Must be organized, detail oriented, and can plan/execute experimental designs.

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and collaborative problem solver.

  • Experience in GLP, GMP and ISO regulation as applied to medical devices.

  • Ability to direct work, manage timelines, and complete projects in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience with equipment/method/process qualification and validation.

  • Proactive and creative in achieving goals, excellent work ethic, ability to deal with ambiguity/uncertainty, and willingness to learn.

  • Aptitude to contribute to intellectual property development.

  • Proficiency with design of experiment (DOE) methodology, statistics, data analysis methods and software (JMP, Python, or Matlab preferred).

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree in a technical discipline, and a minimum of 5-8 years related experience or Masters degree and 2-5 years equivalent industry experience or a PhD and 0-2 years experience.
