The Innovation Systems Space Systems Group is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to assist in the design, analysis, manufacture and test of both bipropellant and mono propellant spacecraft propulsion systems.

Responsibilities may include the following:

  • Research, analysis, system design and development of spacecraft propulsion systems and flight hardware procurement and technical oversight with suppliers and interfacing with customers.

  • Applying research to the design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

  • Supporting pneumatic testing and flight operations as well as authoring procedures and other engineering instructions for test or operating engineers or customer use.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) related area (Degrees in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering highly preferred)

  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain Top Secret/SCI clearance.

  • Relevant experience in fluid mechanics, compressible flow and/or thermodynamics of propulsion systems.

  • Experience with industry standard fluid/ thermal and/or mechanical analysis software, design standards and/or documentation related to propulsion system or subsystem design.

  • Experience with MATLAB or similar engineering tools.

  • Travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct experience with designing propulsion systems or fluid systems including review of relevant analysis, manufacturing drawings, authoring test procedures or hands on pressure or hot fire, engine test support.

  • Experience in authoring performance specifications and/or statements of work required for the procurement of propulsion system fluid components, test support contracts or other related contractual technical documentation.

  • Current or active Top Secret/SCI clearance or higher highly preferred.

Participate in the development, planning, implementation and updating of Health and Safety (H&S) programs, practices and procedures. Maintain positive and proactive relations with managers and employees, as well as our customers and regulatory agencies to achieve cultural change. Set an example by complying with all EHS procedures and policies, wear all required safety Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), encourage safe working practices and correct obvious hazards immediately or report them to the proper personnel. Responsibilities: The following responsibilities are categorized as time sensitive (ts) or routine (r). Time sensitive activities are typically in support of emergency safety situations, regulatory compliance requirements, or critical operational needs. As a member of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) team, this position is expected to provide backup to the time sensitive responsibilities of other EHS team members when those members are not present. * Management of Change (MOC) * (r) Champion the Management of Change (MOC) process by leading or participating in design reviews to ensure new and modified facilities, processes, equipment and tooling changes meet environmental policies, procedures, external regulations and standards. * (r) Chair Plant Process Control Board (PPCB) per TO-ES0601, EHS Management of Change for Gilbert. Attend I&T, Facilities and Collaboration meeting for SMF * (r) Work with various functional organizations to design and install safety devices as well as to ensure equipment is initially installed correctly/safely to prevent injury or property damage. * Incident Response * (ts) Contain occupational safety incidences to stop spread and potential to cause harm. Initiate reporting of incidences in the appropriate reporting tool. * (ts) Investigate and record near misses, incidents, accidents, complaints and illnesses concerning unsafe work conditions including hazardous materials or air pollutants. * (r) Conduct root cause analysis, recommend and implement solutions to prevent further safety incidences and ensure closure of incident reports. * (r) Record and maintain key findings and corrective actions using sharepoint reporting tools. * (r) Lead and present internal & external findings and solutions related to safety event. * Facility Safety Committee * Conducting periodic safety inspections: Inspections should not only include production areas, but should cover offices, warehouse areas and the outside of the facility. Document unsafe conditions by taking digital pictures of the situation. The photo should then be shared at the monthly meeting, as well as stored in an electronically shared folder for future reference. * Review and validate near misses in accordance to the near miss incentive program * Assessing injuries: Review the causes and circumstances of accidents/injuries and suggest corrective action. * Training employees: Keep employees informed by posting information on the company's intranet site, disseminating information at employee meetings and conducting training sessions. * Periodic reviews: Review existing company safety policies and develop new ones. * Gathering employee input: Listen to suggestions by employees, report them to the committee and make appropriate recommendations to management. * Getting management involved: Offering suggestions to management for the improvement of the safety program. * Creating employee awareness: Observe unsafe conditions or work practices, and report them to the committee, supervisors or management. * Occupational Safety Oversight * (r) Monitor chemicals throughout facilities to meet the requirements of the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard and Global Harmonized System (GHS) for classification and labeling of chemicals and maintaining Safety Data Sheets (SDS). * (r) Oversee occupational safety programs such as Fall Protection, Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO), Hazard Communication, Emergency Action Planning (EAP), Hearing Conservation, Hot Work, Respiratory Protection, etc. * (r) Support program specific procedural reviews. Review and approve hazardous operations procedures. Document safe operational practices and make necessary changes. * (r) Continuously monitor and maintain the workplace to identify and prevent potential health hazards including but not limited to: Chemical, Particulate, Noise, Heat Stress, Ergonomic, Eye Protection, etc. * (r) Establish and maintain occupational safety operation and inspection logs required by Company, local, state and federal regulations and standards. * (ts) Monitor the work of outside contractors to ensure they follow our ES practices in our facilities. * Audits and Inspections * (ts) Escort inspectors from external agencies on no-notice activities. * (r) Ensure internal occupational safety audits are performed to verify occupational safety policies and procedures are properly followed. Coordinate and/or assist in the conduct of corporate occupational safety audits. * (r) Perform daily inspections, evaluations, and oversite of hazardous and non-hazardous operations in the factory (i.e., I&T, robotics, propulsion, machine shop, lift operations, etc.). Support program specific operations by providing occupational safety oversight of critical operations. * (r) Provide timely responses and implementation of effective corrective actions. * (r) Resolve compliance problems, questions, or complaints received within the company or from customers, government regulatory agencies, etc. * Command Media (Policies and Procedures) * (r) Review occupational safety policies and procedures to ensure that they meet the most current federal, state, local laws and regulations and corporate standards. * (r) Write internal health and safety policies/strategies. When requested, submit clear and concise written reports on EHS inspections. * (ts) Reviews urgent procedures for unplanned activities or non-procedural activities that could affect EHS. * Safety Program Management * (r) Conduct risk assessments, site inspections and job hazard analysis (JHA) as needed to eliminate potential hazards. Potential health hazards include but are not limited to: Chemical, Particulate, Noise, Heat Stress, Ergonomic, Eye Protection, etc. Ensure appropriate corrective action is taken where potential H&S hazards are identified. * (r) Champion, promote, administer, establish and maintain records of occupational safety accident/incident and investigation for the benefit of all employees and visitors throughout the work place. * (r) Track, monitor, and report periodic occupational safety metrics, providing accurate and timely information/reports to support S&C Management, Space Systems Group (SSG), and Corporate reviews (i.e. Monthly Safety Metrics, SMR, SSG Safety Meetings, etc.). * Support the near miss program and enter near misses into the incident database as needed. * Training, Meetings and Certifications * (r) Maintain Laser and Radiation Safety Officer Certification. * (r) Establish and maintain occupational safety training schedule(s). * (r) Develop and conduct periodic occupational safety and health meetings or training for employees as needed. * (r) Sustain competency in occupational safety (OSHA Safety Training - OSHA 511,DOT,RCRA) * Permits and Licenses * (r) Establish and maintain occupational safety licenses and permits and coordinate/interface with external regulatory agencies. * (r) Ensure timely and proper delivery of support information or certification statements to government agencies to generate and maintain permits. * Other * (r) When requested by management or colleagues, share historical knowledge, key updates, best practices and advice on ES related issues and make recommendations to facility management decisions. * (ts) Act as EHS point of contact for emergency personnel, corporate or external agency audits or inquiries. Backup Responsibilities: * (ts) Back-up the environmental lead on all of their time sensitive tasks or any routine tasks specifically identified by the environmental lead prior to any absences and upon mutual agreement. Teammates are expected to set up a meeting or a call with each other to clearly share instructions/expectations when such coverage/assistance is needed. If conflicting priorities arise between colleagues, consult with EHS manager who will factor in all considerations and make a decision.
