The Opportunity

The position of Sr. Principal Electrical Engineer is a technical engineering role within our ID business unit located on site in San Diego, California. This role will hire an experienced and focused senior level engineer who is a subject matter expert and can deliver high quality results on time and with minimum supervision. The person in this role will design, conduct and lead advanced projects while providing technical leadership to a multi-disciplinary product development team.

What You'll Work On

  • Own hardware electrical systems architecture: make key technical decisions, responsible for compliance to requirements and assure quality of the design.

  • Contribute inputs on a diverse cross functional/cross site team and external contract manufacturers and engineers and individually responsible for major portions of complex development projects involving EE, ME, and SW elements.

  • Use DFM to calculate cost tradeoffs of various production methods to guide appropriate design to support high-volume, low-cost manufacturing.

  • Serve as integration and test lead for electronic systems ranging from early concepts to product prototypes to initial production units.

  • Create supporting technical documentation to support the phase gate process leading internal/external development resources from concept to release.

  • Demonstrates commitment to the development, implementation and effectiveness of Abbott Quality Management System per ISO, FDA, and other regulatory agencies.

  • Understands and is aware of the quality consequences which may occur from the improper performance of their specific job; has awareness of device defects that may occur in their area of responsibility, including product design, verification and validation, manufacturing and testing activities.

  • Responsible for exhibiting professional behavior with both internal/external business associates that reflects positively on the company and is consistent with the company's policies and practices; build productive internal/external working relationships.

  • Carries out duties in compliance with established business policies.

  • Other duties as assigned, according to the changing needs of the business.

  • Managing stress in stressful situations as appropriate

Required Qualifications

  • MS degree in Electrical Engineering with 7+ years' experience in medical device or Bachelor's Degree with 10+ years of experience.

  • Experience in electronics design for test, manufacturing and assembly with an understanding of design impact on EMC, ESD and Immunity.

  • Relevant electrical engineering experience designing robust electronic systems that interface with biological, mechanical and optical systems.

  • Hands-on lab experience with electronic circuits and test equipment to support test, integration, and troubleshooting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering with 5+ years of experience in medical device, preferably in Point-of-Care device

  • Excellent understanding of electrical, thermal, and optical sub-systems and components, and their interactions as a system to meet performance requirements.

  • Experience in design or selection of power supplies and motor control.

  • Experience with design and selection of embedded or programmable firmware devices with experience in FPGA, microprocessors or ASICS.

  • Skills in programming to support experiments and implementation.

  • Expert in electrical systems architecture, schematic capture and PCB layout

  • Experience with component and circuit simulations to support development and analysis.

  • Experience leading or contributing to DFM analyses.

  • Understanding of electronic component quality requirements, reliability prediction, failure analysis, and validation

  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools and methods.

  • Working experience with Altium for Schematic and PCB layout, BOM management, collaboration, and product lifecycle management tools.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to work with individuals and/or teams at all levels and disciplines.

The base pay for this position is $109,300.00 - $218,500.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
