General Summary/Purpose:

The Senior Physician Assistant is a position defined by the NIH as key personnel of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) and The HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN). The Sr. Physician Assistant works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team. Responsible for complex, standardized, patient care procedures which require experience and specialized training which would otherwise be performed by a physician. Educates study participants in matters pertaining to health maintenance, disease prevention, protocol participation and conduct, and appropriate measures in acute and chronic illness. Direct supervision from appropriate licensed physician as designated. This position will also have a leadership role within the ACTG and HPTN units. This position will also serve as a Clinical Research Site Coordinator and will supervise all data entry and data staff. They will oversee all data processes. Including but not limited to data collection and reconciliation, Quality Assurance/Quality control reports, and IRB submissions.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform a comprehensive, accurate history and physical including chief compliant, presenting signs and symptoms, and past medical history and interval history.

  • Recognize differences between normal and abnormal findings in H & P. Significant findings are validated or discussed with a physician as appropriate.

  • Order and interpret laboratory tests, x-rays, diets, or other services when delegated by a supervising physician. Abnormal findings are discussed with a physician as appropriate.

  • Perform injections and venipuncture.

  • Initiate Basic/Advanced life support in response to emergency situations.

  • Proficient at most common procedures that physician assistances are expected to perform.

  • Prepare chart documentation for review and counter signature by the physician.

  • Determine differential diagnosis.

  • Maintain technical proficiency with approved procedures.

  • Prescribe and regulate medications.

  • Evaluate outcomes of previously implemented interventions.

  • Arrange consultations and referrals when needed.

  • Attend staff meetings to discuss patient and unit requirements.

  • Daily informal discussions are held with the physician and other health professionals to plan patient care.

  • Give input for design of research protocols and procedures.

  • Responsible for the conduct of DAIDS sponsored clinical trials including regulatory issues, recruitment and good clinical practice.

  • Coordinate the implementation of protocols in conjunction with the other staff members.

  • Oversee daily operations for clinical research protocols in collaboration with other staff.

  • Responsible to obtain informed consent from study participants.

  • Remain proficient in the utilization of commonly used clinical protocols and guidelines.

  • Must be able to independently access patient, develop a treatment plan and disposition patients in an efficient and effective fashion.

Scope of Responsibility:

  • Working knowledge of the formal and informal policies, procedures and practices necessary to facilitate safe and effective management of acute and chronic illness in patients presenting for ACTG/HPTN study participation.

  • Working knowledge and understanding of the data processes used at the data management centers that support the ACTG and HPTN sites.

  • Working knowledge of all factions of data constructed, collected, and entered within the unit for both sites. Assist the Program manager with the overall day to day oversight of all data staff.

  • Provide education and guidance to patients and family members in maintaining good health, disease prevention and home care under supervision of a physician

  • Attend outpatient clinics and assists with patient management.

  • Facilitate communication between own team and other consulting medical services.

  • Requests consultations with other departments, as necessary. Acts as liaison with other medical services (social work, rehabilitation medicine, etc.).

Decision Making:

  • Uses professional judgment and assumes complete responsibility for any decisions, their consequences, and results.

  • Prioritizes and organizes work to meet the changing needs of the unit and patient care needs.

Authority:

  • To coordinate and make decisions regarding patient care and study participation.

  • To coordinate and make decisions regarding data and data staff after consultation with the Senior Research Nurse Program Manager.

Communication:

  • Develops collaborative relationship with supervising physician determining need and timing of communications.

  • Exchange routine medical information with appropriate members of the study and health care teams while maintaining patient confidentiality.

  • Able to communicate suggestions, guidance, and directives to data personnel.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interview, teach and counsel patients through screening to study completion; instruct site personnel on procedures and treatment.

  • Work requires analytical ability necessary to evaluate and determine health status of patient and implement proper care plan.

  • All above responsibilities will include other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body.

  • Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program.

  • Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.

  • Requires minimum of 3 years' experience in related clinical area, and obtained proficiency in area of specialty.

  • Preferred at least 5 years' experience.

  • Residency or fellowship programs in area of specialization may substitute for some experience, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • Current CPR certification required.

  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.

  • Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

  • Attends regularly scheduled continuing education programs to ensure current knowledge of procedures, health evaluations, care plans and protocol implementation.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to stand and walk for extended periods of time. Visual acuity for near vision. Good hand/eye coordination.

  • Attention to patient safety, personal safety, and safety of co-workers due to contact with potentially infected body fluids with blood borne pathogens.
