Sr. Park Ranger

The purpose of this class within the organization is to perform a variety of work in all parks department wide, to include law enforcement and visitor safety, resource protection and stewardship, and facility management. Coordinates park activities, schedules, and projects.

This class works under general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks. Supervises frontline staff. Salary effective July 1, 2024 Minimum Requirements High school diploma or successful completion of the GED.

Must successfully complete the Hampton Police Academy or an equivalent state-certified police academy. A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Park Ranger performing park operations and maintenance work. Two (2) years of previous law enforcement experience.

One (1) year of experience supervising the work of others. Technical training or college coursework in law enforcement, justice, environmental science, aquatics, or closely related field, with some knowledge of environmental issues, conservation, and wildlife management is preferred. Must attain and maintain a Conservator of the Peace designation.

Must qualify for firearms certification annually. Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria. This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City's current substance abuse policy.

Must successfully pass a Hampton Police background investigation to include polygraph examination, written test, and psychological testing. Additional Requirements Requires considerable contact with the general public and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Requires shift work to include nights, weekends, holidays and on call emergency standby on a rotating basis.

May require some local travel. The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during city emergency situations, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
